    Clear/Branch River - RI

If you are looking for whitewater in RI, the Clear/Branch is pretty much it. It's a 7-mile run with 3 easy class II rapids. My local club (RICKA) ran a race on this river on the 3rd Saturday in March from 1980 until 2005. It was discontinued when insurance became to expensive and river access...

Solo Canoe Recommendations Needed for Rocky and Low Water Rivers

I'd say go for the Yellowstone Solo, but it you didn't like the Argosy with the dog you probably wouldn't like the Yellowstone Solo with the dog. A friend of mine showed up for a trip last week with a Royalex Bell Rockstar. I had heard of them, but never seen one - nice boat. Larger version of...

How much safety is too much safety?

Two times I had a helmet on and was glad I did: First was a WW trip. I was on shore getting pictures of paddlers going through a drop. I ran upstream to get a picture of someone running a higher drop, tripped on a root and went head first into a tree. I was seeing stars. Second was a poling...

    Paddle-Through McDonalds!

Best we can do around here is a Dunkin (Donuts) next to the Assabet River in West Concord, MA. You do need to get out of your boat to walk over, but its a nice place to take a break. 4 or 5 guys show up in dry suits and you get some interesting looks from the locals.

Finally got out to do some paddling

We haven't had a winter like that in a while. Lakes and ponds freeze and the deadwater above the dams, but it doesn't stay cold long enough to freeze up real thick or the freeze the moving water sections of the rivers. I kind of wish it would - nothing like a big ice flow to clean out strainers...

Finally got out to do some paddling

Great to see you here. We'll have to get together to do some paddling. Sounds like you have some nice trips planned this year.

Finally got out to do some paddling

We can usually find open water here (southern New England) year round. Moving water sections of rivers don't freeze but you do have to be careful of the dead water behind dams, and there are lots of dams. If we get really desperate, we can go out into the saltwater of Narragansett Bay. It's...

    Which Canoe For Summer Solo?

I have a Wildfire and a Yellowstone Solo, and use them both. Here is the Wildfire. The longest I have gone unsupported is 5 nights. I could go longer if I packed careful. Two big bags - one in the bow and one in the stern. I usually put my cooler behind the seat and water jugs if I need to...

Finally got out to do some paddling

After a long cold snap, the forecast was for warming weather on Sunday. We put-out the word, and got a group together for a trip down the Wood-Pawcatuck in RI – three boats, four paddlers, all canoes. It was like “river church”. It was a short run – only 5-miles. The river was at a nice level...

    Whitewater preference?

To me, you play in rapids in a whitewater boat, you run rapids in a loaded tripping boat. When you are running rapids you still need to be able to do whitewater moves (eddy turns, peal out, ferries, etc.) but you are doing them to get to a safe place so you can continue down a conservative...

Inexpensive life jackets with decent accessory features

I'm going to try this one - $96 on close out. https://www.nrs.com/nrs-oso-pfd/pbdj Little longer in the torso, full back (except for the vents), two pockets in the front. Need a pocket for my camera, and it is nice to have one for sunglasses. Not sure where to put the whistle, but we'll see.

PFDs: Class 3 or 5 PFD for Whitewater?

When I started out a bought a high-float. I figured if 16 lbs was good, 22 lbs must be better - not so much. It was bulky and uncomfortable to paddle. It is still in my basement in like new condition. Some of the high float models now are probably more comfortable than the one I bought 20-years...

Shoutout your local whitewater boat builder

Yup - you can paddle whitewater in any boat (queue that great section of Waterwalker and check out all those old ribbed style PFD's and CCM hockey helmets), but to me a whitewater boat is short, rockered, with a pedestal and bulkhead or thigh/knee straps and float bags. You can add the Northstar...

Whatever happened to "canoe" life jackets?

The ones I have are a lot skimpier than that. Here they are showing lots of wear. I also have a newer version with a pocket and side adjustments in addition to the belt. I'd wear that one if they still made it. Unfortunately, I picked this one up when I bought a boat and it doesn't fit me...

    1500→16→17→18→19→20→21→22→23→3000 Members

Thanks to Glenn, and all the administrators who have kept this place going over the years. It is one of a kind and a great community. I started paddling around 2005. At that time P-net had a good contingent of open boaters. I remember posting on Boatertalk (thick skin required), CBoats and...

Whatever happened to "canoe" life jackets?

Like these... I still have them, but I never wear them. The problem is if you swim the PFD doesn't stay in place - it rides up making it difficult to swim. I do have one that has a strap that runs down between the legs to keep the PFD in place. The new ones with multiple adjustment points...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

The Connecticut River Paddlers Trail website is great resource. There is an interactive map, a listing of campsites, access points and portages and even some recommended trips. I have done from Canaan down to White River Junction, and the only rocks/quickwater/rapids I remember were between...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

The upper Connecticut River is great - nice campsites, easy paddling, perfect of a for putting together a couple of nights. We've done the sections from Canaan, VT to Blooomfield, VT; Bloomfield, VT to Lunenburg, VT; day trips on the reservoirs from Lunenburg, VT to Woodville, NH; Woodsville, NH...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

I've never seen one of these pans, but sweeper has quite a collection, so they must be around here. We tend to use the "Big Daddy" style pans. They are also steel, so they heat up and cool down fast. We used one this past weekend for breakfast - bacon, home fries and egg-in-a-hole. Other...
