    What stove for Hot Tent

Absolutely, in fact each of the three of us on that trip, along w the dog had a brush w the stove and the bottom flap of the ST, it was an ice skating rink for sure...that way from day two -day four. Burned all the way down the ground and that w with no overnight running of the stove. ST sells...

    What stove for Hot Tent

I like the sound of what you are talking about...the stove 'sinking' through layers of snow and ice, making for at least a 1x a day reset of the position and level... I use two float boards under the stove, w a fiberglass mat under all and some reflectors under and around the stove to work the...

    What stove for Hot Tent

+1 on what Robin was saying & asking. First, what size tent are you planning on? Where and what temps are you going to camp in? How many folks do you plan to have sleep in the tent? How long are your planned trips? How far from the car do you think you have to move the stove? I have an...

    G/Flax epoxy

At $25 or more a tube, Gflex can get pricey in a hurry if you are doing anything substantial. It is also much thicker than the System Three that I last used for coating a surface. It's very handy and hard to get the mix wrong.

    Thickened epoxy fill coats?

Sure is easier to get a really smooth surface for painting if you are using Cabosil or one of the other bulk fillers...lighter, cheaper all around, than just filling the weave w expoxy. I wonder if that Q. couldn't be asked directly to one of the vendors, like West (recognizing that you are...

Poll: How many women canoe? (Update: Detours into a Peeing in the Woods Thread around post #42)

My wife is a paddler, but not a canoeist per se. She has but maybe 5 times in my years of marriage, proposed a day trip, weekend trip, exploration. We have had many neat & rewarding moments on the water, be it in canoe, kayak or white water inflatable but if I gave it up, I think she would be...

WTB SnowTrekker 8x10 Basecamp and Stove or Similar

Personally, the scout tent thing brings back many sort of unpleasant memories... biting and crawling bugs, no bug screens, stiflyingly high internal temps during the summer, snoring tentmates, foul latrines, bad food... but I think I LOVED it at the time! Waited all year long for those 1-2...

    We suck

Alan, bit off track, but on your recent journey did you have to pull permits or pay any fees to travel through those lands that you paddled for so many days...is that First Nations, parkland, Crown land...? (just curious as I am trying to reconcile something I read in Downe's journals). I...

WTB SnowTrekker 8x10 Basecamp and Stove or Similar

Panther Primitives makes 2 stock sizes of mini-wall tents, running about $500 including a stove jack...you'd have to make up your A-frame spiders and source some tubing but that would be a value end to the discussion...

    What are you reading?

Tied all my summer reading up by finally finishing the last few chapters of, "Fatal Passage" Ken McGoogan. The story of John Rae, another iron man expeditionary adventurer, similar to Samuel Hearne (see above recommendation) ...he got involved in the search for the missing Franklin Arctic...

WTB SnowTrekker 8x10 Basecamp and Stove or Similar

ST is certainly the gold standard for that sort of winter tent. Check out Life in the Round & Kanguk (Canadian) for other true winter style canvas tents and if you have the interest some of the tipi style nylon tents from SeekOutside, Kifaru and others. If you are willing to source your own...

    Lows Lake Redux

Less than a week ago I snuck in a hiking trip to the overlook that you access by the upper dam - well worth the stop if you can make it work for you, easy enough hike, take your camera and binocs. Great vistas and the color had just peaked then. We saw a few boaters in the pond and a couple...

Adirondack ice out Hot Tent Gathering

Let us know where you are thinking about. Areas to accommodate more than 2-3 tents are fairly hard to come by. (any time, in fact) Too bad NYS Fish Creek campground is closing early this fall. I just came back from a short week group outing* in the park, where I burned my first 4 fires...

Wollaston Lake to Goose Lake (Nunavut Border) and back

What a trip! What a write up! Great stuff! Great pics, an understanding pooch, a neat boat of your own device, wonderful pics and now as I stare at the second volume of Downe's journals, a better understanding of what you and he and his companions over the years faced. You don't own a...
