    Animal Encounters

@ Mihun09 Broken Arrow Lake in WCPP is a hotspot for caribou. I've seen four caribou in the park, two in 2012 and two this year. Each year one of the sightings was on Broken Arrow Lake. The others were on Royd & Constellation Lake.

Chiniguchi Waterway, Sudbury Canada - Father Daughter trip

I paddled the same route solo in early May, and ran into only 1 other group in 8 days. There were some sloppy trails and a few blow-downs to contend with as I was the first of the season to cross some of the ports, but it gave me a chance to try out my new 'Bob Dustrude Folding Bow Saw', which...

    Photo of the day

A good variety of tripping shots here. Really like the images depicting the rough stuff - heavy rains & boggy portages. Good to see some get-down honest canoe tripping is alive and well.

    Refining my gear

Two years ago I upgraded from using Sealline Pro Packs to an Ostrom Pack. Why did I wait this long? I still have a few Seallines to use as overflow if I'm heading out with the family, or some friends who don't have any gear, but the Ostrom is the Rolls-Royce for sure. I also bought a Bob...

What plans do you have for the bad times?

I have been carrying a PLB for the past few years. I don't want to "check in" with folks back home - I just want an emergency button if I'm in a really dire situation. I do a fair bit of solo tripping, and $300 or so for a PLB is good insurance. Also, according to some of the anecdotes I've...

    Woodland Caribou P.P. - Photos

Thanks all for the kind words. @ Cousin Pete - if you're interested in stepping up your low-light & night photography, you'll really need a DSLR & a tripod. Also, having a lens with a maximum aperture of at least f2.8 is a big advantage. Learning how to use a DSLR, and understanding the...

    Lost paddler found

Where you put your food at night may depend on the nature of your trip. If you're camping in Killarney for 5 or 6 days, where bears are known to frequent campsites, it's a good idea to store the barrel away from your tent, and if you lose it, you can just paddle back to the car in a day or two...

    1939 Canoe Technique film..traditional style!

He must have had a great time practicing all those manoeuvres! I don't think I'd be using any of my canoes as a dock ramp though. Great video!

    Woodland Caribou P.P. - Photos

Here are some photos from a 3 week trip in WCPP this year. If you frequent the CCR forums you may have seen them, otherwise, enjoy! From my website, the new images are in the 'Boreal 2' gallery. http://mikemonaghan.ca
