Whitefish & Lynx Lakes, NWT: 2022

Fishing? Did you get a chance to see what the fishermen were catching? Lake trout and Char I should imagine.

    Yukon River Quest 2022

Great Pics! Thank You! I've gone through FFR twice and noticed both times that some very hard paddling, while turning to the left side of the channel, kept us out of most of the standing waves. Anyway, it's a great adventure and I hope to do the Teslin/Yukon again next year as it's a milder...

That's just great! He may not be pulling a load but he's part of the program. A great companion!

Do you see a lot of wildlife on canoe?

I've hunted moose from a canoe on lakes and slow rivers. It's a great way to quietly slip in close to a bull in the dawn mist. Transporting the moose in the canoe is much preferable to packing on your back.

    Food security

I haven't had a bear bother my grub in the last 50 years. We always pee around our camp to provide a human scent fence which works, usually. Lately we have set two Critter Gitters near camp and we were able to an approaching black bear get scared off by the Critter Gitter. If we are going to be...

    Winter, I divorce thee

I'm seeing newer homes coming onto the market and the divorce rate is increasing as our neighbors move to warmer areas. Our worst winter on record started September 18th and the snow is still 6' deep in my yard. Our moose and bison herds have suffered terribly, and the loss will be substantial...

    Grizzly bears in Manitoba

There have been a couple of these grizzly/polar crosses taken in the last few years. One was killed on the south side of the Brooks Range in Alaska and I think the other was in Nunavut.

    Grizzly bears in Manitoba

Having worked in Alaska's arctic for a quarter century, I only witnessed polar bears and grizzly in the same location once. The grizzly chased the polar bears off the island. No fighting was observed as the white bears departed quickly and willingly.

Freighter: 6ft waves safe and dry, cruise speed 30 mph in flats, minimum load cap 1500 lb

I run a 19' Grumman and a 21" Scott Hudson Bay on rivers and lakes in Alaska and Yukon Territory of Canada. I don't know how you can get that speed out of either canoe. I sometimes run a 20 HP outboard weighing 120 pounds on the 21' Scott and maximum speed is about 17 mph with a 1,000 pound...

    Made my own canoe pole

I've still got a 16' pole that I haven't used in some time. I had bought a piece of electrical shrink tube that I applied to the end to prevent splitting and wear. As a kid in northern Minnesota I poled canoes hundreds of miles in picking wild rice. At that time Herter's had a folding duck bill...

I always have two sizes of Williams Whitefish Spoons in my gear. Primarily for lake trout and pike.

Books that made a profound impact

Campbell Of The Yukon After my first trip on the Upper Yukon River, I found an old copy detailing Robert Campbell's canoe journey from the McKenzie to the Yukon via the Liard River to found Fort Selkirk for the Hudson Bay Company. It makes most of us look like a bunch of wussies.

    Recommendation for outfitter in Whitehorse

I've bought canoes and dealt with Kanoe People several times as well as sending others there for canoe help. The McDougalls were top notch in all instances. The young people working there were very knowledgeable and hard working. I hope to see them in June if this Covid thing doesn't stop us...

Books that made a profound impact

I think I have most of Cal Rutstrum's books that I've read many times. As a very young canoeist, I met Cal and wife in Grand Marais, MN.
