    First build 17' Freedom

Good to know, and interesting concept on a total foam and glass canoe. Given your tests, we should be ok just glassing over the foam core and may not need to shell out the $ on more carbon fiber. Thanks!

    First build 17' Freedom

Wow, what a score! Happy to help. With 3/8 in. being too thick in your opinion, would 1/8 be thick enough for a core like Bens buddys canoe, or my little enhancement?

    First build 17' Freedom

If you are anywhere near Minneapolis, you can save some dough on shipping with pvc foam core (like divinycell) by picking it up at express composites. I did XPS pink foam ribs on my most recent cf build, but im starting to see the space between the ribs oil canning when it is not loaded and the...

    First build 17' Freedom

+1 on Jims curiosity :) What is the layup schedule, rib/core plan, gunwales, etc? So many options with any boat, especially composites. Love to see how everyone has different styles.

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Haha I have the itch! And not just from sanding fiberglass. At some point I will probably have to if I want a specific solo. Lots of cool designs on this forum that are giving me ideas.

    Freedom Solo 16'

Nice documentation on the specific weights. Those are very light gunwales! Compared to composites, wood strippers are incredibly stiff by themselves, I can see how you can get away with lighter wood gunwales.

    Yet another JW Kite

BlackRock - thank you for posting all your progress and questions! This is getting me interested in maybe straying from my composite world to a wooden one. I am really amazed at your and every strip builders craftsmanship with these canoes. The football is always a bear to get on - as soon as...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Yes- I am totally sold on peel ply! Cool that you weighed it to see if they reduced any weight. I will have to try that next time. Whether it cut any weight, it definitely cut out hours (maybe days) of sanding. If you cut the peel ply into 18 in. strips and overlap an inch or so, they do drape...

Wow - that is one sexy boat! Congratulations!

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Thanks Steve! I pulled out the front sliding seat and it weighed 1.5 lbs. That one is 2 in. wider and has some aluminum brackets and pvc pipe attached to it so the rear seat is for sure lighter. So maybe 2.5 lbs total weight for seats? I highly recommend trying to round up some free sticks from...

Thanks everyone! I might just have to round up some more hockey sticks and replace the seats in my other boat.

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Yes - it was fun to see other people zipping through the water in it and see my hard work on display! I wish I would have had time to do more testing on the yoke like you did, and good to know that there are success stories with that foam, albeit the thicker variety. I just bought a scale and...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

I used multiple layers of carbon, adding up to 18-20 oz per side, in line with what I saw on your post, Alan. The yoke felt really hard before I installed it - no depressioning at all. I did not witness it bending so I suppose someone could have put all their weight on it jumping across the...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Ha! You certainly did! I have gotten away with the 1/2 in stuff on ribs with my kevlar build as well, and so far so good on the gunwales. But that direct load bearing yoke seems to be where it ends. I can see how a complete foam core of it would be problematic, especially if it were any thinner...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Back from the BWCA! We picked a route that had a LOT of portaging. If anyone is familiar with the area, that 1.5 mile portage from Hegman to Angleworm is the most rugged one I have seen in BW. The canoe held up pretty well considering it was her maiden voyage. I dont have a scale but I would not...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Forgot to add - it is really lightweight. I didnt have a scale handy, but it is noticeably lighter than its 42-43 lb twin and feels closer to my first build which is 37 lb. Not bad for an 18 footer with added freeboard. The hull is even thicker than the aforementioned factory built one. Go...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Haha yeah Jim but that would be too easy! Live and learn. The yoke turned out ok - not pretty but functional. I can say the same for the boat which I have been frantically trying to get to a minimum viable product for our Bwca trip leaving today. We sanded and covered the gunwales with epoxy +...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Sounds like there is no simple home solution here. I tried out Alans idea with the thin fiberglass over the carbon fabric last night (3 oz satin, style 120). It looked like it was going to be perfect until the edges started sliding off the underbelly of the yoke. That Weezer Sweater song was...

    Carbon Innegra canoe build

Here are a few pics of the updates. The composite hockey stick seats turned out pretty well and are really light. I epoxied some thin wood strips to the bottoms as a staple gun was not going to penetrate the bare carbon. Flotation tanks are in and the back layer of cf is on the yoke. I used the...
