    Passage Solo build

Thanks Mike, I am pretty pleased with the yoke and how it turned out. I actually have the other half blank from the original one which was cut in half, and I would be willing to make one for you if you have not already made yourself another one to replace the damaged one on your new boat. I...

    Passage Solo build

Holmes, Thank you! I always have runs when I brush varnish so I opted for the spray cans this time. Not a single run...I also got the cans for about 6$ each on clearance at Home Depot. Thanks Jim, I almost closed those seat rails up for floatation purposes, and now I'm glad I did not since my...

    Passage Solo build

It's been a long time since my last update on this build, but it is done...for now...I did not varnish the inside yet as I may still do some interior outfitting. I stole my seat cleat idea from deerfly with a slight variation in design. I made it in a similar fashion. Laid up in a big piece of...

    Solo Daytripper SOF build

Cool build! I am interested to hear what it weighs in at. Will you be using Dacron for the skin?

Query: Lengthening a design and its effect on rocker

I built the design which I believe you are talking about. I did no stretch it so I have no idea how that affects the handling. Anyhow here are my two pennies. I built with forms spaced at 12" and ended up with a boat that was only 14'7" long, not the 15' stated on the specs...I wish I had...

    Pearl

I would love to head down that way for a paddle. I am nearly done with my solo build. I would also enjoy testing out some of the different designs you have built over the years. Maybe that will help inspire me as to what design I should build next...It would appear that my next build will not be...

Jim, Can I volunteer to take one of those beauties off your hands?

Jim, looks great! So are you going to sell one of your 3 pearls once this one and the composite one are done?

    Yet another JW Kite

I agree with Brian on the whole idea that not all epoxy is created equally...I have used 3 different epoxy systems to date, and some of them with different speed catalysts. There will certainly be variations in cure times. My rule of thumb is always read directions...especially when dealing with...

Nokomis Wood Workers First Canoe Build

Nice work! I know you may have already stated this, but what are the proceeds of the raffle going towards?

    Northwest Cruiser 17 feet build

Great progress! I would say you have 3 options. 1: leave them be...probably not the most favorable. 2: sand down to the wood and patch them with a small scrap of glass and resin. (Probably the best option) 3: try injecting resin with a syringe. ( this one might be a crap shoot)

Great progress! It seems like you have persevered through the difficult times so far, and learned a lot in the process. Sometimes learning the hard way is the best way... 6 oz full and partial 4 oz on the inside and outside is my preference. The most important place to beef things up is on...

    Northwest Cruiser 17 feet build

I heard in the past that polyester does not bond that well to wood...

I would recommend scraping those bubbles, and glassing before the resin starts to cure. do not rush it. There is nothing wrong with a sanding before glassing, it just adds a little time to the process...but you will possibly sand through the seal coat in some places, which kinda defeats the...

Mostly personal preference. Jim Dodd actually created a thread on this. This is one of those topics that will show lots of difference in opinion. My reasoning is basically the same as Jim's. Some of the other builders on here will bury it for the same reason I like to on the inside of the hull...

    Yet another JW Kite

Well, on my first build I did both layers at the same time inside and out and I wasn't satisfied with how it turned out. In my experience it seems to take more time and effort to get both layers "fully" saturated. I found that while making things with only one layer at a time it is much easier...

I am a relative beginner at strip building, but I will share my two cents with you since some of my beginners struggles are fresh in my mind. I would seal coat with a foam roller of some sort. Make sure you clean the hull thoroughly with vacuum and denatured alcohol before applying epoxy. Try to...

    Quick aluminum gunnel repair?

Have you considered finding a welding shop that would TIG weld a nice bead in there? Might require removal, but probably yield the strongest repair... just a thought

Welcome! It is great to see another builder join the ranks! This is a great place to share ideas and ask questions. looks like you have made decent progress already! Make sure to to take lots of pictures of your progress and share them with the class, because as they say, a picture is worth...
