Tell me about your favorite paddle

It's very helpful to see the changes you made phil! Especially on the grip where it's actual design changes and not just corrections of carving mistakes. I too have found those hard edges on grips annoying. I made that mistake on my first paddles and have had to go back and correct them. It...

I really like the curve on that grip Phil! It's exactly what I mean I like on grips. It lets you angle the hand so the thumb points down just a little bit. What do you mean by a bit rounder? Rounder seen from the side or a rounder top curve? Which are the fixes you made to it?

No Title Thanks Murat! Your advice is always very helpful! I have planned to make elongated grips, as you say for balance and to adjust for kneeling position. The notches for tarp lines is an amazing idea which I will certainly play around with. Is this why you have notches on many of your...

You are so right, turtle. And I think this post really shows just that. But it still is helpful, hearing about those small details people really like or don't like about their paddles. Like the grip modifications lots of people seem to do. It's those details I like to hear, that's where I need...

Tell me about your favorite paddle

Very beautiful paddles Jim! I love the pattern in the wood wood on the first maple. Must have been a lot of work for whoever made it. Do you have any thoughts about the grips on the paddles. Which do you prefer? The softwood grips, especially the left one looks a bit sharp and clumsy at the...

So, it seems most of you like laminated paddles. Is there a reason you prefer that? The pros I see is that a laminated is easier to balance and you get strength where it's needed. But I belive you lose a bit of the flex.

Thanks this is a lot of nice input. I see alot of you are using bent shafts. I will however make straight paddles. What is it that you modify on the grip?

    Thoughts on a pole

I made mine from a slowly grown spruce. You usually find them in shadowy places. They're thin, perfect thickness for a pole. And very strong since you have the whole growth rings. And they weight almost nothing compared to one in ash. And you can most likely get it for free if you ask the land...

Tell me about your favorite paddle

Hello! In a few weeks I'm starting my final project at a woodworking course. My plan is to make 10 canoe paddles in ash (already got the wood). Most likely by one design, maybe two. The goal with the project is to learn how to work efficiently and hopefully make some money at the same time. But...

No Title My tipi living was an optional part of a 2 years course in "friluftsliv" / bushcraft I took in Sweden last 2 years. The school offers the students to live in tipi if they want. You have access to storage and toilet / showers indoors. So it's quite a relaxing way to live in a tipi...

    Pole pike for crossing ice

It depends a bit on the ice. The best is when there is a thin layer of snow on the ice. That protects the canoe really well. Usually if the ice is thick enough I'll just walk and push the canoe, if there's no luggage it won't hurt it much. The worst is if I have to pull myself forward on uneven...

    Pole pike for crossing ice

Hello, I just wanna give a heads up for this amazing tool which makes it much easier to canoe in winter. I haven't read about it anywhere on the net so I thought I might spread the word. And at the same time make some sneaky advertisement of my newly started blog...
