Jim: I like the slightly larger seat idea. What is the size of the caned area on your bigger seat? Looks to be about 12" by 20"????

Yeah, I'm not doing sliders. I'm shooting for slightly bow light, with 1-2" trim up at the bow. Shooting for 1.5", I'll see how close I get. I have an old Peterborough wood & canvas that I want to restore at some point, but that's another project. Those seats are 32" forward, 48" aft on a...

Well, I'm back at work, so I'll be splitting my canoe work between home and school. At home, I'll be fairing and sanding the hull, and glassing it hopefully soon. At school, I'll be working on the trim work: Gunwales, seats, thwart, decks. With that in mind, I'm wondering about seat...

The whiskey strip is in. Bow & Stern stair-steps filled in. I haven't had a drink in quite a while, and today isn't the day to start. If anyone is inclined to help me with this, I'd be obliged. The ugly chewed up part in the lower part of the second picture gets covered by the outer. stem.

Jim: Those are stunning. I thought about stopping a couple strips short on the first side, but didn't. I'm planning to do the method as outlined in the book. One more unmodified strip to go. Going to fit it & glue it, cut the cove off 3rd from last while the glue dries. Hoping to get that...

LOL! I had to look that one up, and sure enough. That's their latin name. I had a few mulberries land on a couple strips and stain them while cutting. A couple made their way onto the canoe. Hopefully they'll sand out. They weren't on very long.

I recently had movers move my parents into an assisted living facility. They left behind a dozen blue, and a dozen green by mistake. There's no labeling on the package, other than large for blue, and medium for green. I also have one red one, I'm assuming extra large. I just did a quick...

Well, I'm done with the Jimmy clamps. I found a couple dozen moving straps, basically giant rubber bands. Blue are 36" relaxed, Green are 30" relaxed. Not as quick as Jimmy clamps, but they fit in tight spaces. I have trim screws into my forms below the shear line, sticking out about 3/4"...

Well, Traveler, "Goodliness is next to Godliness". So, our canoes may not be Godly, but hopefully they'll be Goodly.

Ok, time for a question, as I draw closer to my last couple strips. Canoecraft talks about removing the cove from the 3rd to last strip, gluing 2nd to last, and last together, matching the curve, then fitting and gluing in place. I get why you'd glue the last two strips together. Is it...

I haven't looked to see if I have two more that match as close as these. I matched the pairs as I was doing the first half of the football, numbered the other side, and carefully set them aside. 1,2,3,4,6,5....Oops. The thought of ripping them out, and trying to reconstruct the cove???? I'm...

Well, with 8 strips left to go, I made a mistake on color matching. Not too obvious, but to the builder (me) it sticks out like a turd in a pan of milk.

Got the first half of football cut, and starting strips on the other side. 14 strips left, plus the stair-step on the bow & stern. Cutting the center line, and strips for second side not as daunting as I had expected. Time consuming, but certainly doable.

Well, unfortunately time on the canoe has been limited. Spent the last week moving my parents into assisted living, which I've been trying to convince them they need for two years now. I'm almost at the point of starting the football area, which brings me to my next question. How do you guys...

Just laid the last strip that has to have a butt joint due to length. I'm sure there will be more, but I finally get to lay a full length strip!

Ironically, I was just searching for how much wood flour to mix with epoxy, for one of my many home repair projects. Got side tracked by a video: "Making 2 cedar strip kayaks in 2 weeks" . Not usually a fan of these gimicky titled videos, but I got distracted. This one seems to have some...

Back to the waiting game. Now that I'm getting faster at stripping, and am confident in a good clamp procedure, I'm going to switch back to TB2, with a shorter work time. Less waiting between strips. And the two at a time was short lived; I'm getting into a bit of a twist now.

That gap prior to stapling looks worse than it was. At the worst spot, it was about 1/8". Hopefully my "Prospector" won't end up a "Kliffy Special". Paddling in circles.

Started having the hull spring off the forms when I removed the clamps and belts. Thanks, Jim, for clarifying that stapleless doesn't necessarily mean no staples whatsoever. Added a few, sparingly as needed to draw back to the forms. Using an electric staple gun, didn't want to bury the...

Yeah, stripperguy. The strips are bead & cove. Even though I got the B&C real close to centered (within .010") I'm also keeping the strips all oriented so that what was up on the router table, is the outside of the hull. So far atleast, they're fitting together real nice. Sand it? Hadn't...
