    Cutting Strips

I haven't built a whole canoe, but I did re-gunwale a couple. Tried the table saw on the first one, wasn't too happy. Me and table saws don't like each other. Table saws take up a lot of room, and they love to fling pieces of wood back at you. I think mules are safer. Cutting long strips you...

Lower Colorado Trip 45 miles from Walters Camp to Sqaw Lake

Thank you for that nice trip report. I live in AZ and have been wondering about canoeing the lower Colorado. I stayed at a motel in Blythe about six months ago and asked the desk clerk if the fishing was good there. He said he moved from one of the big cities just be near the river as he loves...

    Dogs in Tents?

The missus and I were sleeping on a inflatable mattress, queen size. Bob The Dog was sleeping on the ground inside the tent. I got up in the middle of the night to take a leak. When I came back the pooch had taken my place and wouldn't move. I tried to push him off and he growled at me. Didn't...

Steam Bending. What is a good heat source to make the steam?

I'm back. My old computer died and this one is borrowed and very unfamiliar. So back to steam bending, I want to say Thank You to everyone who offered a solution or answer to what heat source would work for steaming my 4 little strips of wood. All very good and helpful answers from experienced...

Steam Bending. What is a good heat source to make the steam?

Hello Bob, Wow thanks, I never thought of that! They have wallpaper steamers for rent at Home Depot. That sounds like the ticket!

Steam Bending. What is a good heat source to make the steam?

Hello, I found a beater Old Town Pack from the 1970's. The plastic gunnels are brittle and sunburned badly so the plan is to re-new with Ash. I need to steam bend them to fit the wide, curvy and short hull. I have a pot but can't get enough steam with charcoal briquettes. I have never steamed...

    Latest Shop Blunder

Oh there is a shop blunder section here? Well, well. No pictures but just some good advice. Not a good idea to lay down an angle grinder in the bottom of a Royalex canoe, while the angle grinder is still spinning. Don't ask how I know that, please.

Educate Me, Help Identify A Strange Canoe

You might be on to something there. Maybe it once had an outer skin which has been peeled away by a previous owner. I don't see outwalls on it, so maybe the outer skin is gone.

Educate Me, Help Identify A Strange Canoe

This old canoe appears to have it's wood strips arranged 90 degrees off the norm. How can this be strong? https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/a...155730235.html

Chestnut Canoe For Sale might be GU

Look how close together the ribs are, that has got to be a heavy boat. I did a little internet research, turns out Chestnut did make a model called the Ogilvy, that had close spaced ribs like that one, and it was heavy at 84 lbs for a 16 footer. Was made for fishing guides, a heavy duty, flat...

Chestnut Canoe For Sale might be GU

I'm only 180 miles from Yuma, so if anyone wants me to pick it up for you, just let me know. I might snag one of those "nice oars".

    New Paint Job Coming

Hi Brian, Thank you, that's encouraging. I bought a air powered in-line sander and am now working on the bottom to smooth out the many scratches and gouges it had. This boat looked like a previous owner must have lost it going over some rocky rapids some where, and dragged over portages instead...

    New Paint Job Coming

Mike, Thanks for those excellent tips. Nothing takes the place of experience and looks like you have that for sure. I agree 100% to go with the same color. This old boat was born red and red it stays.

    New Paint Job Coming

Mason, It's hard to find examples of this on You Tube. This canoe doesn't go forward well with me paddling. In fact it would rather rotate sideways then go forward. Higgster, yes red has it's advantages. It looks faster for sure.

    Beginner again

dramey, I fell out of my first canoe the first time I had it in the water. The water was 34 degrees and I had no PFD but I did have a heavy winter coat and work boots and pockets full of tools. That was a near death experience but guess what? I never fell out of THAT canoe again.

    New Paint Job Coming

Howdy, Does a canoe move through the water smoother, easier and faster with a brand new paint job on the hull? My old Sawyer with it's faded, chalky, heavily scratched up gel coat seems kinda doggy to me. I'm doing a little body work, and a few repairs then it's getting a new coat of red. I hope...

    Help ID an Older Canoe

You are probably right. I was willing to cut the boat some slack in the stability department if it really only weighed the 35 lbs as the seller promised. However that finicky stability part might get old after a couple unplanned swimming lessons.

    Help ID an Older Canoe

Lance, Yep those craigslist people are something else. BTW, I just tried to "like" your comment but may have inadvertently hit the unlike button. (They are only about 10 thousands of a inch tall on my screen and I don't have the right glasses on.) If I did, I'll see if there is a way to erase it.
