Source for quality rope in bulk?

The tree trimmer supply houses may have good ropes and prices. I have bought from WesSpur and Sherrill Tree before.

    Tie-downs for Transport

I use cam straps over the canoe to my rack bars. I use rope from the stem to a 1" webbing loop above each front wheel well under the hood and rope to my trailer hitch. I don't use the ropes if I'm only going a short distance and it's not too windy.

    Dry box size for Dslr.

I use a blaze orange plastic sportsman's dry box that I have lined with foam for cushioning. The sportsman's dry box looks like a plastic 50 caliber ammo can. They are relatively cheap and readily available in the US.

    Best Bug Defence

I have had good result against ticks and chiggers with Insect Shield socks. I've used permethrin on my clothes, but it washes out faster than the factory treatment. I don't have much trouble with flying insects around here, so I concentrate on the bugs that crawl up my legs and the socks seem...

GSI "10" Hard Anodized Dutch Oven

I like the flat bottom and dutch oven stand. That way I can use it on a stove or over coals. I often cook with charcoal briquettes and use a pizza pan under the dutch oven. A lid lifter is a handy item, which can often be home made.

Removing paint from a Mad river canoe.

If acetone works, you might want to try Xylene (aka Xylol) or lacquer thinner. Xylene is not as hot a solvent as acetone and may give you a longer working time. Lacquer thinner is mostly a blend of Xylene and Toluene. Toluene is hotter than Xylene. Cold weather lacquer thinner will have more...

    White Water Canoe Plans

Armaflex should be very similar to K-flex and does hold up well to age and UV in the black. With most foams, it's a good idea to use a coat of cheap white latex paint as a UV barrier. Armaflex has one possible flaw, as it seems to have a memory when it is compressed and doesn't always return to...

Water Filters or Boiling? Which do you prefer?

Most protozoans, like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, form cysts, which are resistant to chemical disinfectants. Fortunately, these cysts are large enough that they are easily filtered out of the water. They are also fairly easy to kill with UltraViolet radiation. Boiling is also very effective...

Outfitting a New Ultra Light Kevlar Canoe

For small, but real carabiners, look at the Camp Nano 22 or the Metolius FS Mini. These are wiregate carabiners, but there are some fairly compact keylock carabiners available. I got a couple of Climb X keylock carabiners on eBay pretty cheaply, but they were probably clearance. The keylock...

Thrive Freeze Dried Potato Dices - Good!

No, I've been using commercially dried eggs, lately Ova Easy. Other than the eggs, everything comes from the local store. I do dehydrate the bell and chile peppers that I use. As long as you don't over hydrate the eggs, they come out OK. My standards for trekking food are not as high as my...

Thrive Freeze Dried Potato Dices - Good!

It's odd how some things that I'm so used to don't travel internationally. I would never have imagined that Hungry Jack Hash Browns, which I can find in practically every grocery store and supermarket, would not be available in Canada. We have any number of dried potato mixes to choose from...

Thrive Freeze Dried Potato Dices - Good!

Do you not have Hungry Jack dry hash browns in Canada? I've used them in breakfasts. I have taken the dried hash browns and browned them slightly in oil before prepackaging them with eggs, bacon and bell pepper. My goal was to make something that could be rehydrated with boiling water and eaten...

    Canoeing knife?

A couple of cheap stainless Moras in bright colors, otherwise a Gerber River Shorty. The Gerber is more of a tool than a knife and it has a blunt point.

    Which portage cart?

When you look at wheels, the larger the diameter of the wheel, the easier it will be to get over obstacles, like rocks and roots. The wider the wheel, the better it will support the load on soft ground. I would favor a larger diameter wheel over a smaller wider wheel. Most good garden carts are...

Fix that lantern and mend that stove!! (Coleman that is)

On the spark ignitor, it is absolutely necessary to pull the ignitor down to the bottom of the globe once the lantern is lit. The heat from the flame will cause the flint spring to lose its temper and the ignitor will quit sparking.

    Large Alice packs?

The large ALICE pack only works with the frame. The medium can be used with or without the frame. I made an extended frame by welding two ALICE frames together. It fits me much better than the standard frame and allows me to use a newer suspension system with load lifters. It's a lot more...

    Cane or webbing?

If the cane is splined and the spline is glued in, it can be very difficult to remove the spline and get the old caning out. One possibility for a replacement seat that looks similar to cane is Polyester cord (similar to boot lace cord). It can be woven like cane, but needs holes around the edge...
