    1972 Old Town Chipewyan 18'

Will have to remember the temporary gunwale trick. Is the inside discolored or stained on the sides near the gunwales? My last project boat is discolored were the seat hangers were. Iskweo there is no program for people like us. We are canoe rescuers. A nobel calling. There should be a national...

And so it begins... (Bell Merlin II Repairs)

Just finished a seat today. I use an inexpensive soldering iron to cut/melt the webbing. A trick I use is to cut a cereal box into strips the same width as the webbing. This way you can plan and mark the underside of the seat for webbing location. https://www.countrybrookdesign.com has nice...

Finding a Solo Boat For Buffalo Bob.

Bell Wildfire fits me perfectly at 6' and 215 pounds. Was looking at the differance between a Bell Star fire and Bell Star fire last night. Just put the new that's in the Star fire and put it in the rack above the Wildfire. Star fire is significantly wider ad will have a lot more skin friction...

Thoughts on a Bell Merlin ii (not that I'm looking for another canoe...)

Feel the same way about my Bell Northstar and Bell Wildfire. "As far as aesthetics - Glenn, I get it. There are few things more sad then a 10 year old boat (of any kind), that is brand new. However, it will see a fair amount of use with me and oddly I find myself wanting to keep it as true to...

Bell StarFire rebuild. Lots of questions and hopfully a few answers.

Used up all my free time this past weekend working on this project. No time to post or take pictures. Then last night we had a lightening storm with two sides of rain. Better known as a toad strangler or a gully washer. No way was any work getting done in that or any internet being used. A...

Thanks every one for the information so far. Mike McCrea Trying to find the "Burnishine Aluminum Brightener" locally. Looks like an Amazon buy. But looks good. yellow canoe I assume you mean Marc Ornstein of http://www.dogpaddlecanoe.com. Right now until we find out how the rest of the...

Bell StarFire rebuild. Lots of questions and hopfully a few answers.

On the Fourth of July found a Bell on Craigslist about 95 minutes away. Person that was selling did not know much about it over the phone a was kind of wary of asking to many questions and the price going up. So I left in a hurry to beat any one else to it thinking some one had just added a...

    Royalex Bell Nexus

Why dose every one want the same boat as me? A Northstar. Have to agree with Baryon. If the price is right and you like to out fit canoes then go for it. I would most likely buy a Whitesell if the price was right. And I live in Florida

Giving in to modernity (way off topic)

Up in the north GA moutians right now. Could of really used a good paper map like that gazette. No GPS signal. No mobile Internet. When we managed to get signAL for the GPS it sent us down forest roads that after 40 year's of remembering tramping arundel rods here I had yet to find. Need...

    Where can I paddle if . . .

Do not forget beaver attacks, (they can kill), wild pigs, and manatee. A couple of us here have fallen prey to the manatee. It is all about risk management. Often wounder which is safer. The drive to the water or on the water? Besides bears and poisonous snakes in my front yard...

    Fort Myers, Fl. Checking in.

Blazer. Mohawk or Classfive built with a removable motor mount. The Blazer is a great canoe for most of Florida and easily to find used. The biggest problem I see with the Blazer for you is the load it can carry for camping. As a scout leader you probably will be carrying quite the load on the...

Advice on putting small paddler in a Wildfire

Well I tried to upload a photo but the site says the Image is too large. Going to work on that on tomorrow. Cause I know many are not going to believe this. .The wife just stood up in the Wildfire today like it was nothing. Claims a Wildfifre is stable. So yellow canoe is...

Advice on putting small paddler in a Wildfire

Same as deerfly here. "Not a FB user or fan" so I missed out on that. The last time I was at a demo at Katies it was when a Curtis rep came down for the winter with a trailer load of solo canoes to demo/sell. Katie let him have the prime campsite on the river to the upstream side of the area...

Advice on putting small paddler in a Wildfire

Now my wife is a dedicated tandem paddler who loves working together while paddling. In places that require a lot of constant turning she is the best bow partner you could ask for. Sanding in the bow of a Bell Northstar is done with great ease. While I was putting the Wildfire away...

    Northstar or Wenonah for solo

For any thing other than lakes and even then I would go with a DY (David Yost) that Northstar uses over a Wenona design. When you are talking the Northstar canoe I believe your are asking about their Northwind solo. Or maybe the Polaris rigged for solo. So with that said the Northstars will...

    Fiberglass hull maint/ freshening?

Their have been a few threads on this site about maintaining gel coat. Do not use wax. Wax will "grab" the water. The only reason to use wax would be if you used buffing compoud that wax in it. I think Yellow canoe wrote about that. Check out the end of this thread...

    Hanging seats

Have wasted a bit of ash trying to make longer or shorter Bell style seat drops. Even the drill press dose not always equal success. Going to try for another set of seat drops for a Wlidfire next weekend. They will be 5/8" longer than the originals. The last set the drill some how went a...
