    Hot coating varnish?

Thanks Mike. This is on the canoe interior and gunwales. I have a couple of little electric heaters going under the canoe and temperatures in the garage are in the 75-80 range, so should be good. I am putting the Helmsman on in very thin coats and it actually dries to the touch in a little more...

    Hot coating varnish?

So at the varnish stage on a 14 foot pack canoe I am finishing up (again). I actually thought I had this boat done last fall but had to do some major deconstruction and reconstruction (will post something on the whole, very sordid, story later). I am using Helmsman spar urathane, and just put...

16' Pegaso with terrible Osmosis, how to fix?

Absolutely - I didn’t mean to understate the noise and mess that would be involved. And for sure wear a respirator.

16' Pegaso with terrible Osmosis, how to fix?

Unusual problem. If there are hundreds of the bubbles, I assume it is all over the bottom and at or below the waterline. Repairing them one at a time just doesn’t seem practical. Others will likely have better solutions, and I take Mike’s point about giving advice in the absence of experience...

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

I’ve done my bead and coves on the inside, as Jim describes, with no issues and no planing required. Worked fine for both 1/4 and 3/16 strips and with three feather boards holding everything in place it never felt like it was a safety issue ( but then again I guess most things rarely do until...

3M Dual Lock—Q's & A's and Tests for Canoe Uses

An option to use Dual-lock with minicell foam is to first attach a very thin strip of wood (like 1/8/ or so thick) to the minicell using contact cement, and then apply the Dual-lock over the wood strip. I’ve used this to successfully mount a carved minicell seat to the floor of a pack canoe -...

First solo canoe and solo safety

Thanks for that post Mike - good advice but more importantly, given that it’s now minus 10 Celsius outside with light snow, a good reminder of better things to come.

The most you've ever paid for a canoe (buy or build)

100% agree - if they don’t get to experience it, they won’t care about preserving it

The most you've ever paid for a canoe (buy or build)

I haven’t been into canoe ownership for all that long, but I have built all of the ones I have owned. In terms of the cost of what actually makes it onto the boat the most expensive would be about $1,000 - $1,200 CAN on a 17.5 foot cedar strip tandem I finished last year (S-glass is crazy...

    Bucket Seat for Canoe

Doug, have you tried Western Canoe and Kayak - https://westerncanoekayak.com/plastic-tractor-seat/. They sell Clipper Canoe seats for $35 CAN (probably around $25 US). I bought 3 from them last year, and can spare a very lightly used one for the cost of shipping from Ontario if you don’t have...

    Tortured Ply canoe

Here is the website with the plans Jim - http://flo-mo.weebly.com/one-sheet-boats.html - it has downloadable pdf files (all in metric) There are also a few build threads here and there on wooden boat.com and songofthepaddle.com, as noted at the beginning of this thread. The 12 footer requires a...

    Tortured Ply canoe

thanks stirpperguy - much lighter than I had thought. BTW - there is a plan for a 12 foot boat using this method, and calling for just a single 48x96 sheet

Thanks Jim - yes, I agree it kind of looks more like a prospector than anything else

    Tortured Ply canoe

Now that’s interesting stripperguy - I assumed they would have to cut it to deliver by UPS based on what I was told a year or so ago when I was going to order a 1/2 or 3/4 sheet to try out for gunwales (this is from Composites Canada in southern Ontario - I did not follow through once I was told...

    Tortured Ply canoe

Knock on wood, but the worst resin contamination I have had so far was a couple of dozen sets of fly legs permanently embedded in the first canoe I did, after removing the little buggers with chop sticks from the partially set resin - didn’t think about moving the garbage cans stuffed into a...

    Tortured Ply canoe

So here’s an update. Following up on lashing the gore ends closed, I scarfed and epoxied into place the two cherry wood inwales - pretty straightforward process, but note the 25 pound plate on the plywood to prevent it from tipping over on me due to the weight of all the clamps (don’t ask how I...

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

Nemo Tensor Ultralight air mattress for me. Bought it when I was more into backpacking so it’s 1 pound weight combined with 3 inch thickness was key. Bought a Hennessy Hammock during their odds and ends clearance last fall, so will give that a try this summer.

anyone ever make their own removable yoke?

just noticed that Canoedog has also referenced the hinge-attached yoke in his link. Sorry for the duplication (but it does work very well).

anyone ever make their own removable yoke?

A simple and effective way to make a basic removable yoke is with a pair of hinges - I outlined how I did mine here: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/10-pound-challenge.98006/post-116695 A strap yoke might also work for you. Most would use it for the short trip from vehicle to water, but...

    Tortured Ply canoe

It seems very doable on the face of it, but I have no experience working with divinycell so don’t really have a feel for how it would react to all the bending and twisting involved. I imagine 1/8 or 1/4 divinycell has a fair bit of flex, and heat would give it more I assume. I know Corecell goes...
