Poll: Where do you sit when soloing a tripping canoe?

Backwards in the bow for me, I just find that it is more stable both loaded and unloaded especially when entering and exiting said vessel. Looking at adding a double blade to give me "more power" (read in your best "Tim the Toolman Taylor voice) especially in wind so I can keep my schedule.

    Manitoba/Ontario Route Assistance

There are people on those routes even in winter!! Some nuts are even pulling sleds. Unfortunately no holiday time really left for 2016 so it probably will be a 2017 trip. Thanks for the suggestions - but I may just bail out to dogtooth/kilvert and explore around. I need to get my H1 card...

    Manitoba/Ontario Route Assistance

Yes, Jerry is who I contacted first. I caught him before he took off for 5 days. He has been tripping that area almost as long as I have been walking. I figure its a 3-5 solo - but I am not in a hurry yet to get back outdoors - still enjoying the rest! Still have to get Sophie her sea legs...

So I am planning a solo loop trip that I may or may not get to do this year, depends on time and weather. I was looking at the following route description and was looking at the maps (just have to get my hands on one topo I am missing). http://www.paddle.mb.ca/resources/ro...ner-lake-loop/ Here...

    Keeping stuff from freezing?

When I am traveling in the winter I have an insulated compartment in my top bag that keeps stuff from freezing if I put a hot pack or Nalgene in it. Overnight I have put a water bottle inside the sleeping bag but usually just my 3L pot on the stove with the lid on it does not freeze solid. I...

    Hex 12 Tarp kit

Seam sealed and bought some fancy smancy Niteeyes clips and doo-dads. Just have to make a Stuff Sack and we are done. I think something like the CCS ones that Hoop demonstrated would be cool. Here is the final pics: Back Side Front Sde Big enough for me and the pooch to wait out bad...

New to tracking on my SPOT

The unit has to be on and located where it is capable of receiving and sending the satellite signals. I had tracking for one year and then ditched it. Only send two per day - one to say I survived the night and the other to note when I arrive at camp. The message says same thing. Not Dead...Yet.

    Tick, Tick, Tick

Thanks for your report, yes the fishing in remote areas is much better but the crowd usually finds a way in as well. I am always reminded of the portages in Grass River cached with tin boats. Kinda sad about the goslings. - but I guess something will clean it up. I am sure you will find...

    Hex 12 Tarp kit

Hi Alan, This link is to the project idea - not sure what I will actually end up with but probably some combination of the project below and the sleeping bag from RuffWear. Weight will be a key as will be size. She is a border collie / spaniel cross ("Sprollie") and kind of long...

    Hex 12 Tarp kit

Hi Red, no I did not look too hard at other hammock type vendors. But I am starting to look at some of the us cottage industries more. I used two local options as comparisons - MEC's Silnylon Guide & Scout, and Integral Designs Silnylon 2 & 3. My criteria was 1) weight (acted like a gram...

    The Death of a Portage

We ran across something like that one year on a hike, lost a bunch of time trying to find where the trail continues. Sad that they don't chip all the small stuff up for the pulp mills or even to aid decomposition. Don't know too much about forestry so may not be logical. As a trip leader I...

    Some Arizona Flyfishing

We only have a couple of native brook streams everything else is stocked Stillwater. I FF from a jon boat - more stable than the canoe. Casting and rocking the prospector just felt too tippy, add wind and it was a frustrating day. 6wt+ rules out here but a bunch of guys fish for channel...

    Hex 12 Tarp kit

Hey BV: Sophie has now escaped three times - two different kennels/crates. Total damage (not in same instances): one bashed nose, numerous scratches, one couch, two pairs of shoes & one hair dryer. That is why she was nicknamed the Kraken by daughter #2.

    Hex 12 Tarp kit

A bit of feedback on the kit: Lots of material in case you mess up, Grossgrain is 3/4" wide and linelocs (thanks BV) are 1/2". Template for $10 made the cat cuts super easy, worth the $10 or $13 cdn when you factor the time involved in making a template. You can reuse it too if you don't cut...

Late, slow and unprepared paddling companions – A rant

I see a book. "Tom told her in all honesty that a bird hit it." bonus points for saying it with a straight face.

Late, slow and unprepared paddling companions – A rant

I do a lot of group trips, in fact majority of my trips are group. Enjoyed your stories, thankful that most of my issues are people/personality related. It would be nice to have a regular group of buddies or friends to trip with.
