New purchases that have been great, even game changers

I would agree with Glenn that my best purchase was the Platypus gravity filter system that I got at a 30% discount while working at Canoecopia. A friend actually paid for it and we donated it to the Wabakimi Project for use on their trips. Previously we used MSR Miniworks Filters, which I...

Canoe basic course on the river "Thur" (Switzerland)

Well run weekend training can be very helpful. It was through the River Touring Section of the Wisconsin Sierra Club that I got my initial whitewater/river running training in the early 1980’s. Sadly, I understand the Wisconsin Sierra Club no longer includes the River Touring Section. They...

What do you use for a table?

I have had one of these GSI folding tables for quite awhile. A bit heavy but I justify it as one of my comfort items which advanced age entitles me to. It is used on my increasingly common base camp trips. I also have a roll up table about size of a card table which was used a lot when my card...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

In the last several years I sold off my Quik-n-Easy rack which was great and attached to rain gutters. And I sold off my dad’s which he attached to 2x4’s for his rack. When vehicles with gutters disappeared these racks went into the garage rafters. And years later there was a market for them...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

Woodpuppy’s post reminded me of my first British sports car , a ‘58 Triumph TR3. My recall is that it had a small key to turn on the ignition and then you pushed a starter button. I soon discovered that the keyed ignition lock was so worn out that I could simply use a fingernail to turn the...

    Food Staple Trail Cooking

I last did the kind of outdoor cooking you are asking about with the scouts in the 1960’s. In the more recent past my brother and I would do hobo-type meals (cut up potatoes/onions/carrots with some browned stew meal) wrapped in aluminum foil and baked in the campfire coals. Now that I often go...

New cars: are they as impossible as they seem for cartopping?

Great that you could engineer and build your own rack system instead of having to buy the outrageously priced commercial stuff. I continue to use Yakima stuff I have had for years and have used on multiple vehicles, mostly Subaru Foresters (I am on my fourth Forester), the current one is 2021.

Vanishing Trails, David and Lea Jackson

Great video - thanks for sharing. Searching for old portages was what we did for the 14 years of the Wabakimi Project - look for old blazes, trail tread and old cuts by ax or saw. It always amazed me that Uncle Phil could flag a likely route without finding any signs of an existing route and...

Canoe Trips in the Last Wilderness in Scotland

Thanks much - very enjoyable. I have been to Scotland, the olde sod, 3 times bicycling and hiking. I would like to do a paddling trip. Clan Sinclair member for about the last 30 years.

WTB: Family style canoe (OT Camper, Penobscot, etc?) in Royalex

Nice. I had the exact Tripper purchased new Spring 1983 and used extensively for 23 years. It was still going strong when I sold it because I grew too old and weak to carry it.

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

After reading all the stories of people’s experience with the eclipse I am sorry I didn’t make an effort to experience the total eclipse. In SE Wisconsin we had about 90% which I have to say was not very impressive. Kind of like a very slightly overcast day or like one of the days last year...

Supermarket Food Ideas for Extended Tripping

A buddy who likes to camp cook will make pancakes and makes his own maple syrup using Maplene (appears to be a concentrate), which tastes pretty good.

    What are you reading?

Have you tried audio books available at many libraries. They are great on road trips.

Supermarket Food Ideas for Extended Tripping

While traveling with Uncle Phil and the Wabakimi Project I learned that Phil always packed one emergency meal. My recall is that it consisted of 2 pkg Knorr Spring Vegetable soup mix, 2 pkg of instant rice and dehydrated peas. This recipe made a large pot of soup enough for 4 people. I still...

    Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical Canoe Hulls

I was really enjoying this thoughtful thread until it went to symmetry/asymmetry in regards to wives. In June I will be married to wife #2 for 50 years. And while I am not the smartest guy on the block when it comes to women, I know this is definitely a topic I would never ever bring up in my house.

    NY ADK Raquette River 3/29/24-3/31/24

I first went to the UP in 1970 and found it to be everything SE Wisconsin is not. Almost no people and many, many trees. I always loved the solitude you can find there - the western UP is mostly National Forest so plenty of places to disappear into. I have also been to Isle Royale NP several...

    NY ADK Raquette River 3/29/24-3/31/24

Nice trip report. I am waiting for the ice to go out and stay out in my favorite area in the UP so I can get out on my first trip of the year.

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

Me too, in terms where I acquired my collection of used paddles. I always tried to return any found paddles if they were marked with the owner’s contact information. Incidentally, I also have a large collection of used tent stakes I have found in the Sylvania Wilderness in the UP where camping...
