St. Regis Canoe Area advice please

There were recent break-ins in the Lake George and Washington County area (nowhere near St. Regis). I was on Little Tupper Lake for the last 3 days and there were no problem at that parking area or the Round Lake parking area.

    It's going away

I can fully understand and sympathize with what is being posted here. For me, the desire to paddle and canoe camp is very strong. For the most part, right now, while still working, the time is limited. Hopefully that will change if my plan to retire next year comes to fruition. However, medical...

    Soloing while married

For years, when I tried to win approval for a satellite text device, my wife would say, "You don't need that, you always come back." I never quite knew how to take that...Now, at 67, with my daughter's support (both philosophical and financial), a device is part of my kit. After I purchased it...

    Stoves for the backcountry.

Pocket Rocket if carries are involved; Peak 1 or Whisperlite if not. Add to that a Uco Flat Pack Grill and a Svante Fredan reflector oven when I am base camping for 5+ days. The last two items aren't essential and add to the gear, but I enjoy using them.

Dogbrain has a couple of new videos out.

I watched both videos over the weekend and really enjoyed them. It felt like I was along on the trip with you. I subbed and shared them with a couple of friends. I too was wondering about how you did the route charting. I have never gotten beyond tracing with a pointer on the few videos where I...

    Anorak Undies

I have a Fjallraven wind anorak. Most of the time I wear it in camp with my base layer, either a Terramar merino wool top or a 32 Heat top (both long sleeve). Sometimes, when it is colder, I wear a Patagonia fleece sweater or vest as an additional layer.

What's going to be your first trip once the border opens

I am sticking to the ADKs again for 2021; there are locations there that I want to revisit and plenty of new ones on my list. If all goes as planned, I will retire in June of 2022 and the trips north of the border and to Maine will be on the 2023 trip list.

    Impressive Graffiti

I remember reading that about the cave. I never saw it, but very upsetting. Graffiti may have a place, but it isn't in the wilderness for sure.

    Any new "Toys" for Christmas?

After many years of "You don't need it, you always come back," my wife gave in, took advantage of a $100 off sale and got me the Garmin InReach Mini. At 67 years old and doing all solo backpacking and canoe camping trips in the Adirondacks, I am very happy to have it.

    Any new "Toys" for Christmas?

I agree that duffle bags are a great way to carry gear. I have an Earth Pak (50L) dry duffle that I like to use on trips with no significant carries. I put all my hammock gear, kitchen kit and some other odds and ends in it. I've had it for 3 years and am very satisfied with it.

    Any new "Toys" for Christmas?

It's the thought that counts. Throw it in the car and let him know you have it there in case you need it when you're on the road or a camping trip.

3 Days on the Brazos River Texas

My congrats, it looks like you had a really good time. I took my daughter on her first canoe camping trip when she was 7. She sat on the floor of my Autumn Mist while I paddled us into the Adirondack backcountry, where we spent five wonderful days together. Last year we went back to the same...

    Svea 123

I had a similar stove lineup in the 80s and 90s: Svea, MSR Whisperlite and Peak 1. I still have the Sigg cookset, fuel bottle and cap with a (plastic) spout. The Svea and Peak 1 are MIA, I don't know what happened to them. I still have the cookset and fuel bottle and cap, which still get some...
