Great narrative, makes me want to do the same thing. I hope your next testing round goes well!

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Interesting, I'll have to check my maps. I wonder when the port was cut. If it is in the Nipigon plan and was cut recently, there might be grounds for a complaint, as I had thought that surrounding plans had adopted my guidelines for the Kenogami plan, with 70 metre buffers on each side of...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I've often wondered how many LNT enthusiasts have walked across the ports I cleared with a gas powered chainsaw, or how many campsites they have stayed at where I have knocked down chicots that could fall on a tent and basically made the site habital. LNT is a nice concept for well used parks...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

If the ports haven't been cleared in 8 years, they will be mostly gone. To put it in perspective, the Marshall lake ports were cleared two years ago.

Five day base camp trip on Seboeis Lake in Maine

Looks like a great time! Makes me want to get the old Tremblay out.

My mistake, I had assumed you only got the one year license, you're good to go.

Not to burst your bubble of frugality, but all Ontario licenses expire Dec 31. However, you Outdoors card should be good.

    King Arthur's Canoe

The Knights of Olde, defying the woke lifejacket crowd, throwing it in their face with the brazen protest of chain mail, the ultimate anti PFD.

Kevin Callan's 91 (!!!) Rules for Wilderness Canoe Camping

Rule # 1 - When on a group trip, if an unknown person hands you a small carrot muffin that has a skull and crossbone wrapper on it, immediately refuse it. Rule # 2 - If rule # 1 was ignored, upon realizing that the muffin was in fact loaded with the Devil's lettuce, do not attempt any form of...

Fun fact - when I lived up north, I learned that the Anishinaabe word for snow goose was we'we, pronounced way-way, Wawa is known for it's big goose statue, so I can only assume that the town was named for the snow goose, but ended up pronouncing the word wrong, and erecting a statue of the...

What's your morning routine on canoe trips?

Lol, I have smoked with Phil before in T Bay while he was schooling me in MNR double-speak in regard to forestry plans. He was a great guy.

What's your morning routine on canoe trips?

Wake up with my head pounding from the liquor the night before, curse this general mess known as existence, crawl out of the tent with various parts of my body cramping up, hope that someone else has water boiling for my instant coffee, light up my first dart for the day, develop bowel movement...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

Best use for a bent shaft I have ever discovered. Threw a dirty double blade in later on in the night too. Satan appeared momentarily to punish me, but I beat him back to Hades with my trusty sassafras beavertail.

Thanks for getting that report out so quickly, it was highly enjoyable, I'm a bit let down there is no new chapter this morning, lol. As far as I know, you are only the fifth person or group on the loop this summer, and there have been only three people/group who have dome the whole loop. Me and...

    What are we doing wrong?

Keels don't make much difference in tracking, it's mostly down to your technique. NC prospector has more rocker than some canoes, but is still relatively easy to make it go in a straight line. Your weight difference is also minimal. Have you watched any videos on the J Stroke or the Goon...

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

I believe I was in Kenora at the time of your return, which is around a 8 or 9 hour drive from G-Town. I had found that tire in the bush and threw it at the turn point of the port, and then hung a sign at the junction. Beyond the tire is an old skidoo trail which will lead one into a land of...

Cheryl is a great gal, she's also a nurse, and was my main helper with the Outers program in the first ten years that I ran it. This shot was taken on one of the Steel trips. In the spring, that port between Stone and Ara can be a real soul destroyer, vast areas of deep water and loon sh@t...

Great instalment! A couple of points of interest - I think the cabin was recently sold, I knew the fella that owned it previously, they were pretty liberal with other people using it, I stayed there once in very bad weather. Looks like they have been doing quite a bit of improvements on it...

Do you bring an ice chest or cooler?

not to mention beef, lamb, goat, pork, horse, etc. I usually bring my goats fresh, like still "baa-ing". Ultimate bear defence weapon, plus it will clear up your campsite of any weeds, and provide endless hours of amusement. When Ive had enough of their silly antics, I eat them.
