Non-POV Camera Recommendations Around $500 or Less?

I too use a little Canon (SX130) and keep it in a small Pelican Case that sits inside a daypack at my feet. In the end how many shots taken in rainy conditions are worth viewing anyway. All my videos are taken with the little Canon.

Your odd habits in making camp?

If the weather is not threatening and enough time is left for my clothes to dry I get in the water fully clothed and get rid of the day's salt and grime accumulation. Then my Crazy Creek chair is positioned against a properly slanted rock slab so I can sit back and enjoy the view while resting...

Longer solo trips and resupply question.

I have come to accept the fact that I will be triple portaging on any trip two weeks or longer. For my style and eating habits I can do three weeks with the loads starting out at 55 pounds each. The days of starting with three 75 pound loads are behind me so I am looking for other options too...

Wallace to Sasaginnigak via the Bloodvein

I spent 19 days in Atikaki roaming around and spent some time finding a dry passage through the middle of the Sakakoneekum Portage. This is a link to my trip report with access to the gpx file and a link to a G4 map with my info overlayed. The info can be used to access the rivers to the north...

    Cowboy Coffee thoughts

An update on my plan of using a thermos for my coffee pot. 19 days on the canoe trail and I pronounce it a grand success. Two heaping tablespoons of coffee in the quart thermos and then boiling water added. Five minutes later I would tap it a few times (following some hints in this thread) to...

Wallace to Sasaginnigak via the Bloodvein

This spring we flew into Kawaseecheewonk Lake and took time to walk the Sakakoneckum portage out to the Bloodvein River. Walking back from the Bloodvein river I noted that the first 20 minutes were pretty good trail. It does dip into the bog for no reason in some spots. After that 20 minutes it...

    Cowboy Coffee thoughts

On our group trips we make cowboy coffee using different methods depending on whether the Swedes are watching. One thing that is constant is after at least 5 minutes of brewing everyone's cups are filled and the rest poured into a thermos to keep it piping hot. I am packing for a trip with one...

BWCA Solo trip with my dog Jake

Thanks for the report Bob. I bet you wish Jake could have been with you for that extended stay on Windy Bi## Rock a few years back. Your notes from that one would be well received too.

    Canoes not tippy?

I just inherited an Old Town Penobscot 15 foot canoe, yes a Penobscot 15, made about 1993. The canoe never got much use because almost everyone that took it out ended up getting wet. These were not seasoned paddlers and I know that model has had its fans. I had used it for a BWCA trip so knew it...

    Shore Lunch

I was killing some time too on a rainy Sunday and brought youtube up on the big screen TV. Right there in the recommended row was "Shore Lunch." Fresh from the editing room and a joy to watch.

    Greetings from Minnesota!

I have been studying maps all winter so when you say Sasaginnigak Lake was the halfway point I know your route from the north probably is not used very much. We plan to fly to Sasaginnigak lake and explore routes from there. The Sasaginnigak River will be in the future as will the Leyond loop...

    Takedown Skillet

The Roch Guss pans have worked very well for us. Hard to find but did see this on E-bay. The handle is easily removed when packing up camp...

    Weather radio

Since I carry the Satellite phone my wife texts me the weather each evening. I can then make safer and drier plans for the next days travel. We use texts so I get the info loaded to the phone with even a brief satellite connection and frees up our talk time for other things.

    This trip...together...

Wow!! I hope I am really seeing this. This is not a campsite but an old trappers cabin. The door is securely fastened but not locked so I unlatch it and push it open. Some papers in a hanging metal basket show dates from the 1970's. It does not look too bad for having sat unused for that long. I...

    My newish Fast Bucksaw

It is an ExPed Airies tent they no longer sell. I like that design, straight side walls add so much usable space.

    My newish Fast Bucksaw

No Title Looking forward to tripping with this light weight (10 pounds when full of gas and oil.) New model for Jonsered (cs2236t) but same saw as Husky T435 and discontinued Redmax top handle.

    This trip...together...

The sun was well up in the sky when I awoke out of my stupor. With the horrendous throbbing pain between my ears its a wonder any sleep came at all. Worse yet I had passed out sprawled out on the rock with my bare buttocks exposed and it felt like every blood sucking insect for three kilometers...
