Atikaki Provincial Park Manitoba- Fly-in Basecamp canoe trip videos

Oh, this is tragic news. That is our plane and pilot from all of our Atikaki fly-in trips. I had not heard about it until your post.

    Travel Alarm Clock

That is why I use my Garmin GPS's alarm when tripping or on the road. I can not hear a lot of the high pitched watch alarms. The GPS turns on to wake you so no battery loss.

    Scored a new pan

Poking around an old logging camp I found a rusted out Cold Handle Pan. It has the name on the handle, do they all?

    Energy or Protein Bars?

I take Cliff bars for when I need energy late in a long hard day. All Cliff bars are not the same. For the energy provided I take Cliff Bar Brownies. I am not saying they taste good but they fuel me up like no other I have tried. The better tasting Cliff Bars have too much sugar for my system...

Who all had this book back in the day?

Without the Internet I never knew about the book but sure could have used it for my '68 Beetle. First time driving it I found it eerie that I could roll up the passenger window with out leaning over.

GCHS Outers Spring Trip, June 2019

A great and well deserved tribute.

    Been Hungry on a Trip?

In the old days we would just let people bring the meals assigned to them. Bad Choice! Some people think the servings rating on the packages mean something near the truth. Worst case was a trip that where one person required that he provide all the food. The prep questions seemed impressive and...

Everyone takes a chainsaw with them, right?

In chainsaws each company has numerous quality levels- yard work to pro. Heading into the bush you need one that will still be in one piece at the end of the trip. On a really hard project back in 2013 where I knew if the saw quit I would have to turn around I took two medium duty saws. It...

Everyone takes a chainsaw with them, right?

On yeah, I would rather clear the portage than fish. I can take care of the big stuff left behind by the Silkys. Used to carry a medium sized saw but went to a Jonsered top handle used by arborist. Not the safest but one-handed cutting while seated in the canoe is easily done. 14 inch bar and...

    Thinking of Mem !

I was frying up some spam on morning #20 of a canoe trip last week and filming the process for a canoe cooking video. I warn others when I am "on air" and this time told them not to say anything to offend our Canadian friends who have a special fondness for Spam. I was remembering the spam...

Image stabilization causing blur while panning?

My Panasonic ZS100 has two stabilization modes. Full for all movements and panning where it only compensates for up and down movements. Now I understand why.

How to handle the physical and psychological issues of aging?

My canoe group was 3 this year. A funeral last winter and another with some heart rate issues trimmed it down. The last few years we have been scaling back on the travel but staying out longer. One partner is in his 14th year of Parkinson's and the other is getting hit a lot by the effects of...

    Needle Pulling Thread

+1 I was hesitant to mention how handy duct tape is for pulling a cleaned cut closed. Used in narrow strips over a sterile bandage has kept numerous gashes closed for me.

    Big Water Double Take

If you do opt for the cheaper versions just never use someone's all carbon version and see what you missed out on. LOL

    Big Water Double Take

Go to the Werner site and do some research on the different Camano paddles. The all carbon is my favorite but most expensive.

    Sponges

I use a big one crammed in a cut off milk jug that serves as a bailer. The jug fits snuggly under the seat of my Prism solo. Very handy for quick wipe downs.

    Belt and suspenders gear?

Sometimes two chainsaws because clearing portage s really is my thing.

    Big Water Double Take

All I ever use is a Werner Camano all carbon 260cm. Help from this forum led me to the Camano. I could not be happier as 240 was too short for me and a lot of others wanting a double blade for a canoe. Problem is Werner makes these longer paddles but stores rarely stock them so folks are sold a...

    Sixty Strokes

I just started on #68. One 3-4 week canoe trip in late summer is my goal. I gave up doing ice-out canoe trips because I have a secluded log cabin with woodstove and metal roof in Northern MN to play at in the shoulder seasons. If you are able to do it twice weekly strength workouts really ease...
