    2024 subaru outback stock crossbars

Just tied my canoes on my Dodge Durango. Have an Outback but two canoes cruising up I. 29 in ND is no fun in a quarter ing gale. I like to use the hood hinge for a strap anchor point. Lines up well with front thwart. Then I put taut strap connecting both canoes together at first little thwart...

    2024 subaru outback stock crossbars

My 2015 has place to attach straps for extra security. Not sure if they still do that. Also mine has a place to screw in tow hooks right front and left rear. One tow hook was supplied. If you have a trailer hitch it covers the left rear but trailer hitch a great safety tiedown . I often slip a...

Does canoeing northern areas reduce the luster of the southern areas?

No doubt about it for me. The solitude, quietness, no anxiety about finding an open campsite, wildlife not seen further south and things that are hard to put into words. Bush whacking across WCPP years ago I walked up on a ten star campsite. Five inches of lichen covered the open rock segments...

    One last chance

Gather all those that are done with portaging and plan a fly-in base camp type trip. That is my norm now at 73. I can still portage but prefer a base camp and day tripping. BWCA and QUETICO are a miniscule portion of canoe country. Heading in for 6 weeks shortly and doubtful I will see anyone...

Help, I need to expand my horizons.

My go to place now is Atikaki PP in SE Manitoba. We fly in about 50 miles from Bissett, Manitoba. Adventure Air took over the Bluewater operation there. No permits, no park trail maintenance, no usable canoe map and very few paddlers. Northern Tier Scouts kept many trails clear but have now...

    Any upper extremity amputees here?

I can see the double blade as an easily adapted device for you. Set the blades with no offset and no hand twisting needed. Most double blade paddling works well with lily dipping strokes. Shallow and not much effort. Torso twisting is where the power comes from so arms stay locked. I am...

What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

My tires and I hate the Honey Locust. Best use is gathering the longest thorn clusters for an Easter prop. BobB, I find that the biggest Whitetail bucks like the Prickly Ash for bedrooms, the thicker the better.

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

I keep mine in a case in a fanny pack so it is always easy to find and attach.

Stay Out of the Woods in June!

My personal best was 165 picked off my body and clothes after working on a grassy trail in northern MN. After that I started treating my cabin attire with Permethrin so that record will stand. A needle nose pliers assured no double counting.

Supermarket Food Ideas for Extended Tripping

Fortunately my new haunt of Atikaki Provincial Park in Manitoba is so laden with Walleye and my paddlers love fishing that it becomes a question of what side dish tonight. Copes Roasted Corn takes a while to rehydrate but is worth the wait. The flavored instant potato packets keep things...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

I have to have a tarp. I need to have a view on nasty days if possible. On a Summer trip I had bushwhacked to a remote Walleye lake and found a camp spot to use when I would fly in with friends that fall. At the prep trip meeting I made sure we had the needed tarps. That fall we drew a nasty...

    What's your best dehydrated meal?

I add rehydrated ground venison to the various Hamburger Helpers. Simple and a great meal in the bush.

    GoPro types vs. traditional cameras

I use the Corel Video Studio for my editing of videos. It has way more than I need in an editor as I try to keep things real without all the transitions and effects that are at your finger tips now. Once I got using it a few times I have found it easy to piece together a video with all the...

    GoPro types vs. traditional cameras

I am using a Panasonic Lumix zs200 now. I had a zs100 but the gear for the lens retract started sticking. It had been dropped numerous times and saw a lot of use. When it failed after 5 years I expected to go with some new magic camera but found the zs was still the best value and just what I...

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

Paddle with a carbon double but bring along a cheap plastic brute for boney spots but mostly as a walking stick for rough portages.

    GoPro types vs. traditional cameras

I have stuck with the small cameras that have zoom capability. Many use the Go Pros but they would never work for the videos I put together. My camera still fits in my pocket but in video use it is almost always on a tripod which I feel is very important to make the best viewer experience.

Tips To Deal With The Great Tick Invasion

As I have dug into what they know about long term issues with some tick bites the stories get too hard to follow. So many ailments may be from untested aspects of what a tick can do to your body.

    Bannock Sacrilege

My go-to camp bread uses the Martha White pizza crust mix. Just add water. I like it because it comes in a plastic pouch that is the perfect size for my 10 inch cast aluminum pan. Covered with a tight lid and low heat for 15 minutes and then flip. When its blueberry season I sweeten with brown...
