    New point and shoot

The lens and shutter of our Nikon CoolPix 'mysteriously' jammed up after my wife dropped it in the sand on an upper Colorado trip last year so we decided to replace it with something a little more rugged, a Nikon AW130. Waterproof to 100' and supposedly shockproof. My wife is an outdoor wild...

    (Very) Big Canoes

My wife and I were on a GC backpacking bender we're about an hour from Flagstaf. Where are you guys hiking? We are currently messing around in the Ceder Mesa area in UT. I really like high desert backpacking :- ) Im planning a long Comb Ridge trip right now for fall and will do a 3 night off...

    Knives and other bladed tools

I started to do the neck carry when I was in MT, it was easier to get to when backcountry skiing and I found the same thing applies to river running. Neck carry doesn't work with heavy knives though, but scandi's are wonderfully light :- )

    (Very) Big Canoes

The Green would be a fun trip in a big canoe, good warm-up for the Grand Canyon :- ) Hydration is always a factor on these SW rivers :- ) I've been on some trips where folks are putting back the beer. I enjoy good beer, but prefer the British Navy recipe for 'Grog'. Two parts dry red...

Your a victim of your own success Robin :- )

    Knives and other bladed tools

The knives you see stuck to the PFD's of white water boaters are rescue knives not camp knives they are made to cut web and rope etc. I've used mine maybe a half dozen times in the last 15 years. You don't need them a lot but when you do, you really do haha One time was cutting my own PFD off me...

    Bivi Bags

That's exactly what I do :- ) I have to say though it has to get pretty desperate for me to ground sleep haha All the rivers I do in the SW have some tree's or other suspension points excepting the Colorado though the Grand Canyon.

    Map Case

Here's the 'RiverMaps' guides I was talking about and my SealLine map case that's such a pain to close it hasn't closed for at least a 1000 miles of whitewater tripping haha We like the RiverMaps for the rivers we have them for, they are rugged, spiral bound and accurate. In case Sqwid reads...

    Map Case

We use a Seal-Line case, looked good in the store and held River Map guides like it was made for them. The zip lock top is a total fail for us, about all it does is keep the guide book pages from flapping in the wind

    Supernova Rigging

Sounds good Sqwid :- ) Everybody does things a little diffent for sure. I completely agree with the bureaucratic hate. It anoys the hell out of me every single time when someone wearing body armor (plate carrier no less) a sidearm, taser and pepper spray, half a dozen flex cuffs and other bat...

    More Efficient Paddling

Well said Mike :- ) IMO there aren't any advanced techniques, only the basics applied well and at the right time. I can surely say all the lake paddling I've done between river trips since moving to AZ has upped my over all fast water boat control. When I'm doing my lake paddles I usually...

    Xtratuf Boots

Oh yea, I wore out a pair every 90 day contract when I worked on a fishing boat out of Dutch Harbor AK haha These days I take a pair of 'Bogs' cold weather tripping. They are waterproof and neoprene lined. Just the right amount of insulation for cold water boat rigging. The are also light and...

    Supernova Rigging

Thanks Skwid :- ) I'm still fussing with the bags, I have them folded over in the stems because I have flotation chambers. I might very well pull them all the way forward under the decks and secure them there and just inflate them around the chambers. Im trying to rig them secure but still...
