East Branch Fox River - Michigan's Upper Peninsula

I used to drive by it on my way to backpacking at Pictured Rocks. It was a pretty small river. I certainly don't have much to offer, but I have been told that there were a lot of little log jams, and that mosquitoes were a big issue. You might try contacting the Hiawatha National Forest...

Best donuts or best donuts on the Road

Odyssey, I want one of your mother's donuts and one of your daughter in law's choice cupcakes. My blood sugar just spiked, and I'm only thinking about them.

Safely tying in gear, and storing lines

Wow, there's a lot of great information here... and great stories. I appreciate all the answers. Short line and carabiners sound like a really good plan. I will, of course, let you know how it goes. The trip won't be until late July, though. I am excited already.

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

Thank you for all the information. I won't plan on boating, based on your information. I will probably carry my little inflatable, though and hope to play a little at the campsite. There's nothing so fun as messing around in boats. :-)

    Canoecopia

I did it as an 8 hour drive. It was great! Pringles

Safely tying in gear, and storing lines

I like the idea that the bags won't sink. As to blowing away, I'm not worried because in this instance, it's a lake. I just paddle to the end and pick up my stuff. I'm sorry for your friend. That's a fear, which is why I asked the question. I'll keep working on an answer that works for me...

Best donuts or best donuts on the Road

No dust up from me... I just don't want to be driving past a great donut. I agree about the homemade. They should have nutmeg, and be kind of crisp on the outside--just like Grandma made.

    Gunflint Trail

That sounds really wonderful. I'm taking a guess I can't get one of her donuts, though. I do like his writing. That's a great memory. Where, by the way, are you in the interior? I've paddled the Porcupine to Fort Yukon, so I've been in a teeny bit. I remember Abby writing about standing on...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

I know that at least some of you have gone from Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake. I'm planning on making hiking reservations for this summer, or at least trying for reservations, to the site near the point where the river leaves Shoshone Lake. I am wondering about hiking in a packraft, and on the...

    Gunflint Trail

Sooo, if those aren't the best donuts, where might they be? I had a couple last year and was extremely happy. I wouldn't mind doing a little research on that.

Safely tying in gear, and storing lines

This is broad, but... I've never been the one who had to tie in gear before. I will have either a large backpack, or a couple of smaller waterproof bags that will have all my gear. How do I tie them in so that if I go over, they either stay with the boat or in the boat. I recognize that if...

"Me and You and the Red Canoe"

I'm a librarian. I gather the books at home AND at work. Pretty good at it, too. :-)

    Bears while canoe camping

That's a great picture Larry, along with a good story to accompany it. I guess I'm glad to be bringing Spring along. I certainly have cabin fever. The stories are showing me that my concerns aren't totally moot. I guess that means that when I get back, I have to post a trip report with...

    Bears while canoe camping

Interesting answers. I will be in the Tetons. Watching that video made me realize that this was a possibility. I can see the movie now--Shipwrecked by a Bear--in Technicolor, no less. I shall haul my boat up from the waterline! I have to admit, that while backpacking I have great...

    Bears while canoe camping

I've backpacked a lot in bear country, but not done so much canoe camping. I have watched the video with a woman whining at a bear to stop breaking her kayak... have any of you had bears show any or much curiosity in your canoe? How about an inflatable? And no, I don't cover my boat in...

East to West through Okefenokee NWR

That's a great trip report! I took a quick tour of the Okefenokee a few years ago, and was surprised at how, once we got off what I'll call a canal, the area was so open. It wasn't at all like what I thought a swamp would look like. That said, I loved your pictures. It sounds like you had a...

    Reservations in the Tetons!

I had hoped to get a night on each side. I got what I got. I'll be happy. Heck, I'm happy now just thinking about it.

Well, maybe they'll go shopping instead, next time.

    Reservations in the Tetons!

I am almost100% sure both my sites are on the West side. That's what I could get reservations for. Maybe, I might ask if another site is open for one of my nights, and I could trade. I just want to enjoy! I will use bear boxes if they have them, hang food if necessary, or I have a Ursack I...
