Mourning the loss of independent outfitter shops

I miss Cartwright and Danewell. I moved from MI a few years ago, but it used to be a really interesting place to shop.

    Winter solo trek

Dad used to talk about “the timber.” Since I moved from Iowa, it’s always been “the woods,” or forest. Thanks for that... I even heard it in his voice. :-) On a backpacking trip, we pulled out a stove at a break and made a little hot buttered rum, and poured it over pieces of leftover...

Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

Don’t fret over giving us to much information! We’re not little kids hiding under the covers in bed, reading by flashlight (I’m making an assumption here.). We’re reading this because we WANT to, because we LIKE it. (As least I do.) If you write your river trip report now, you’ll be able to...

Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

Well gee, you had me pretty choked up at the end. Do we get to join you down the river, too????? About Distant Summers, check your local library. If they don’t have it, they can probably get it on inter library loan.

Our Winter of Content in Canada's Western Arctic

I’m really enjoying this. You are obviously good at identifying birds. I know people hunt ducks and geese, but are swans “good eating”?

    Plains States Tripping?

I’m not totally sure which states you’re looking at, but... I think you could do what you wanted in South Dakota, on the Missouri, and while it’s not exactly next to Illinois, the White Cliffs section of the Missouri River in Montana is surrounded by hills or flats, not mountains. Land Between...

Thank you so much for writing this. I can hardly wait for the next installment.

How Canoe Tripping saved my life....

I work at a college. I had been in a 12 month position, but I got the opportunity to cut it to 10 months. Sometimes I’ve even gotten 9 month contracts. It’s cost me money, but I’ve used those months to LIVE. I know one man who retired on Friday and died Saturday morning. If that happens to...

    returning to canoe country

I was going to suggest Canoeicopia, too. I used to live in the Soo. You have some great places to play. I love Lake Superior Provincial Park, but don’t just drive by Cedarville and the islands in Lake Huron. There’s at least one nice forest service campground on the south shore of the UP...

Helinox chairs on sale till Jan 1

I love my Helinox chairs. I started with a One, which I really liked backpacking. Then I hefted a friend’s Zero. Sheesh, it practically lifted itself. Had to get one of those, too. It so beats sitting on a log.

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

Holmes, I'm (at lunch) looking at the link about Heart Lake on that website. Wow. Now I want to go there more than ever. And if I get that trip around Shoshone, I'll get to the Shoshone Geyser Basin for the second time. That site has such incredible pictures.

Throwing line over a tree limb, and a recent revelation

I want to try using those techniques for bear bagging. I usually do ok getting the rope over the bear poles in Yellowstone, but sometimes it takes me quite a while. On one trip, a fellow hiker was videoing parts of the hike. He started videoing me trying to throw the rope over the pole. Things...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

Thank you for the link Holmes. And thanks for your work on the campsites. I’ve done so many hikes in Yellowstone where I’m going to some campsite, and am surprised to stumble through some thermal area. For a few weeks, I had been thinking of one campsite as being so-so, when I realized that...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

Dogbrain, thanks for the suggestion on the campsite. I’ll go take a look at the itinerary I prepared, and I’ll do 8M2 if I can. I’m putting in for one night at Dunanda, but if I get it, it’ll be preceded by a short day from a site in the meadows, and followed by a short day to a different site...

    top quilt

Black_Fly, for your pup you could get a down throw from almost anywhere (Costco is quite well known for them) and either just let the dog do what he/she wants with it, or sew a pocket at the bottom for him/her to snuggle into. Here’s a shop on etsy that some Appalachian Trail folks have been...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

I don’t envy the Minneapolis part, but the Gunflint sounds nice. I was there a couple of years ago, and thought it beautiful. I used to live at the other end of the big lake. Now I live near Yellowstone. I’m preparing my reservation applications for next summer. I had a site near Mr. Bubbles...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

That sounds like a great trail. I’ve hiked from Lonestar to the campsite on the lake, by the geyser basin, then did the geyser basin as a day hike, then out at Lonestar again. This year I did Lonestar to the top of the Bechler River. I’m hoping to get a permit to go around Shoshone this coming...

Yellowstone, Shoshone Lake, Lewis River quesiton

I did my hike over Labor Day weekend, and spent two nights at the site by the backcountry ranger cabin. I didn’t carry in a boat. I spent almost twenty nights in the backcountry this year, between water sites and hiker sites, and when my mind drifts to memories of trips, I have found that the...
