Multi-Day Flat Water Options OR, WA, BC?

Check my blog out for a write up on the Yakima. Granger to Prosser is easy with loopy meanders before it picks up heading into prosser. Sunnyside dam to Granger was braided with lots of strainers...we waded a lot in there. I wouldn't want to be in there in higher water. We were windbound on Ross...

    What's a scratch worth?

Oh man, I am going to have to pay people a lot of money to sell my canoes to them.

    What goes in/on your PFD?

No problem. The original question was wide open - people carry different stuff depending on where they are paddling. I wouldn't use the fanny pack if I was paddling any real whitewater.

    What goes in/on your PFD?

I should have noted that I mostly paddle alone and avoid whitewater other than the occasional rip roaring class 1. I have a swift water rescue cert. and you're right on about watching for gear hang ups. I'll keep the fanny pack.

    What goes in/on your PFD?

Knife, whistle, a few snack bars in pfd. I wear a fanny pack bailout bag with keys, phone, wallet etc. in waterproof case, basic compass...and whatever depending on the trip.

The Compleat Guide to Modern Bear Deterrence

Multi-Day Flat Water Options OR, WA, BC?

Oh yeah, for British Columbia. I always wanted to do the Powell River Canoe loop. I moved before I had time. You might look into the Sechelt Inlet. I kayaked it, but I think it is protected enough for a good canoe trip. Good Paddle only campsites. Start is in the town of Sechelt. It's a bad...

Multi-Day Flat Water Options OR, WA, BC?

I paddled Ross Lake in the North Cascades. Hated the National Park campsite checkout system - really idiotic for a mountain lake with the possibility of mountain winds. Otherwise, a good paddle and scenic as heck with no road access except at the ends. I did 3 days on Lake Ozette (Olympic...

A Stripper and a Composite Copy

"padded" staple gun. I think the key word was, padded. Note that the staples were proud and there were no tool dents. pretty good idea!

    How did you learn?

Boy Scouts for the basics. Reading books for the rest of the paddling stuff. My backcountry skills come out of a lot of mountain climbing. My only water related classwork is a swiftwater rescue course. I was a raft guide for a couple years.

    ownership

I'm out in my canoe 80+ days/year. It's a lifestyle, not a trip to the amusement park.

    Old Town Royalex 16’ Penobscot

I've used it loaded for an week long trip, tandem, in class 2 water. It doesn't excel at anything, but it does everything good enough. It's tough but not too heavy (60lb). Mine is pretty beat up with 400+ days of canoeing on it, and I'll buy another if I can find one. And I agree with Will...

    Old Town Royalex 16’ Penobscot

I used my solo for several years. I put a kneeling thwart in it. Before that i paddled it backwards from the bow seat with a bucket of water for ballast. It works. it's such a good all around canoe.

    Why race canoes?

The best trails in the Cascades were not the PCT. There was a lifetime of much better hiking to do there without getting on that overused highway. The few times I saw the PCT, I was impressed that it was jeep trail wide...that's a lot of people that can't stay on a trail.

Short Encounters with Bear and Mountain Lion

I lived for 27 years in the NW. I agree with Mason's interpretations. I am skeptical of the cougar video and feel that we are not seeing the entire story. I suspect that the video is in part, a set up, either by baiting a cat or intruding on a known den or kill site. That just wasn't stalking...

Does waxing the hull make the canoe slower?

I waxed my canoe a couple times. It didn't make any difference other than it was a bit shiny, until I used it. The time would have been better spent canoeing. By the way, Northstar says in one of its videos, if you're only going to 303 your canoe a couple times a year, then don't bother. So...

Does waxing the hull make the canoe slower?

I'd sell the Bentley and buy a bunch of canoes...and pay someone to wax the canoes.

Online wilderness first aid class? Experience and/or comments?

The last time I took wilderness first aid, it included re-enactment exercises with live actors. I think that the triage/field assessment process is important. My opinion is that you are going to get what you paid for, instead of what you need.

Vehicle vandalism while in the wilderness

And then, one day, I went out for a 4 hour day trip. When I returned, my binoculars, which I had accidentally left laying on the ground when I launched, were hanging on the side mirror of my car. I like where I live.
