    A Raven for Christmas

Now that I have gone beyond the point of a chemical bond for a fill coat, how should I approach the sanding for the varnish. Would a light hand sanding create enough adhesion for the varnish to adhere, with out cutting into the fabric? I know I got to much resin in the inner stem areas. I have...

A new Nick Schade inside glassing video

I did exactly what he said not to do, I fussed around with the inside of mine to much. I made a lot of rookie mistakes. I like Nick Schade's videos. He explains things simply and very well. Thanks for posting this link at this time Jim.

How is your winter so far?

Yes please, East Tennessee. We just don't see snow very much anymore. Just cold, grey gloomy and wet outside. Another 2 months and it'll be camping and canoeing time.

    A Raven for Christmas

Glassed the inside today. I think it turned out good. Got some scraping to do when it cures a little. I was about 2 feet short on the cloth, but I had plenty of pieces to make do. I'm thinking about skipping fill coats. I don't think it adds any value structurally. Lots of arm scrubbing...

How do you inflate your air mattress?

I still use the ascend self inflating pad that I got at a Bass Pro shop several years ago. It's about an inch and half thick when inflated. I'll lay a wool military blanket over it, and I sleep very well. I've had it for several years, and no holes in it yet.

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

My normal attire when canoeing Except I might wear a different hat. I like quick drying shirt and shorts. Bugs aren't a problem around here, so I would have to learn what to wear if I was in that type of environment. If it's cold outside I wear what ever is warm, comfortable and doesn't soak up...

    A Raven for Christmas

Yep that did the trick. I thought about leaving it like Alan said, but oh well. I surprised at how quick the poplar wood soaked it up. Roy

    A Raven for Christmas

Uh oh. I was sanding on my inner stem and got a drop of blood in my canoe. What can use to get this stain out, or should I just smear blood in a pattern so it all matches.

First time builder Ashes Solo Trip

Looks great! I'm very impressed at the 22lbs before inside glass. I'm curious how the poplar is going to do for gunnels. Roy

It's off the forms. 38 pounds, give or take a couple, the old bathroom scale probably not very accurate.

    A Raven for Christmas

Thanks Mem, I brushed the varnish on that area to see how it was going to look. I won't do the full varnish until after the inside has been done. Then I'll finished sand the exterior and then varnish. This thin coat of varnish will be sanded off. Thanks for your advice. It's been 3 years since...

    A Raven for Christmas

Started sanding the epoxy. I felt like I was cutting into the fiberglass cloth really easy. I was using 120 grit on the orbital sander. I cleaned the end with a wet rag and dried it off. I was all over that area and figured I was really tearing into it in a bad way. After washing and drying this...

    A Raven for Christmas

The horses are my wife's collection hobby of Breyer models. She's been collecting since she was a little girl. I build her display cabinets every now and then This one in 2017 solid cherry. Local sawmill lumber. This I made last year. It's black walnut. Local sawmill also. I enjoy wood working...

    A Raven for Christmas

Yes I figured I would do a rough sanding this week. I did shave some of the drips and threads out. A bit tricky with this wide scraper I have to pull up on it so I can watch and make sure I ain't gouging it anywhere. I am anxious to check the weight of it at this stage. Spending some time...

    A Raven for Christmas

Eh yes, maybe I over stated that a little to much. Hey ya know what would be really cool? Is to have strips running around instead of a long the length something like these painted on stripes. That would be cool 😎 Ha. 🤔 Yes I think Memaquay's build put me on this path of the Raven also. The...

I don't think I should've tried that strip pattern, unless I would've had a form on the inside. No regrets, yet, but I haven't seen the inside. Which one are you going to build?

    A Raven for Christmas

Finished the last fill coat 2am this morning. I feared the chine would be a bear to get the glass to cling to, but it turned good. I'm looking forward to seeing how it paddles.

    A Raven for Christmas

Just finished glassing it. It took 1/2 gallon of resin and a quart of hardener. It's raining and 60F degrees outside. I opened the windows for ventilation. I'm using RAKA 127 and 350. Not much of an odor, I feel ok, I think.
