    Making a Seat

That little Craftsman bandsaw has served me well. I need to replace the rubber on the drive wheels. I did a 1/4" mortice like what your picture shows. Glued the joint and run in a good quality deck screw. Thanks for the advice Roy

Yep, I already glued them things up anyhow. Maybe I'll get it done in a few days. I'll tell you what tho, nothing smells better then steaming walnut and cherry

    Making a Seat

Jumped in and took a dive at it. 1st time steaming anything. I couldn't find my other half of my make shift form, so I just started throwing the clamps to the part I had. I'll do better next time and have a better form. One rung at a time.Slathered the glue on and then about 20 more clampsI...

    A Raven for Christmas

Yes I think you are correct. I need to just ripp it on the table saw. I don't know why I worried about getting them perfectly smooth. Of course Alan may be right about the cut of wood also. I'll check this out. I may have to get some better lumber. I think 3/4" wide strips would've easier to...

    A Raven for Christmas

I made poster board templates from the prints. Took extra time but I like leaving the prints in good shape incase I need them for reference.I'm crawling along with it. I'm struggling with my wood strips for the stems. I was going to try the Nick Schade method that Mem. did on his Raven build...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Yes I've the triple layer back breaker. I took a small trip last fall and had to portage everything from the parking lot to lake shore, about 200 yards. I thought for sure that beast was going to break my back. Roy

    Mohawk Nova 17 in R-84

I've got a Mohawk solo 13 that says R-84. It cost slightly more then the royalex material when I bought it in 2012. It was stated to be a few pounds lighter then the royalex. I keep it hanging in the basement when not using it. It seems to be just as solid as the day I bought it. Roy

Appears to be a Chestnut, reasonably priced in northwest Vermont

That would be fun. Maybe if that was closer to home. I'd never get around to it anyhow. Good find tho. Roy

Mad River canoes no longer being produced

I found the original paperwork from mine when I purchased it. We took the paddles and life jackets with us, and went down the road to the nearest place to put in. I have no regrets getting it. Roy

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

I wish my wife would just pick a side and paddle.

    A Raven for Christmas

Naw, I'm to slow putting things together plus I enjoy the building process. I'm using yellow poplar, tulip poplar, Tennessee state tree. The strip quality is so much better then the sassafras I made the Wabnaki out of. I've got plenty of cherry and some black walnut for accent strips. Well...

    A Raven for Christmas

I just received my packet of plans from Green Valley Boat Works for the Raven canoe. I started cutting my strips last week. Using a skil saw to cut the strips was a lot easier, and faster, then the table saw. The boards varied in thickness from 7/8" to 1 1/4" thick, so I cut all strips width to...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Better be careful, she might make you move out to that camper van. I wonder if a Madriver in royalex would handle much different then the one I have that's made from the heavy stuff? Roy

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

Wood is very pleasing to look at. I'm to cheap to fork over big money on a canoe. When we are in Knoxville TN I stop at an outdoors store that sells the nice sleek carbon and space age material canoes. They hate to see me coming because they know they'll have to clean the slobber and drool off...

Mad River Canoe - Been Nice to Know You

Oh I guess I got one of the last ones made. Took it last fall to a boat in site. I didn't know I had to portage it from parking lot to water, 200 yards. About broke this old mans back. I didn't know much about canoes when I bought it. It's heavy and a bit slow, but it's durable, and it has...

    Making a Seat

Ooh I never thought about wood color changing like that. Wow I've already cut out the strip too. 🤔 Oh well, I sure ain't getting any prettier also. Is that the Kipawa in the picture? Very nice. I'll check out the link to your build. I'm hoping the cantered seat will be easier on my knees. I've...
