    Totally Bugged Out

If chaga has a life history like other fungi (I'm no expert), harvesting the black surface clump of mycelium will not kill it, since there is more mycelium inside the tree. It will stay there until the tree finally dies, at which time different fruiting bodies will emerge and allow the fungus to...

    Totally Bugged Out

Insect mating is very weird in human reference, because of the hard armoured exoskeleton making things mechanical. Picture needle nose pliers clamped in a steel vise, held together with sharp hooklike things and probes that ensure everything stays in place and goes in properly. Different...

    What are you reading?

Bruce... yes, Terry O'Reilly's shows were great... some great research on business. trends, consumer culture and advertising. I used to listen to Erika Ritter's Dayshift every afternoon while working at various remote places with Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. And Bill Richardson's show...

    What are you reading?

Hmmmm... I have looked forward to CBC radio listening many times at night while on solo trips. There's something comforting about finally relaxing in the tent at night and listening to good old Communist Broadcasting Canada. It's good for you, even if you don't like it at first. Still listen...

Paddling and tripping post spinal fusion?

Good news Alan, best wishes for quick recovery. Isn't modern medicine a miracle? Sadie will benefit as well, if there's been inactivity. All the best! PS... all the old buggers I hang with also have trouble standing straight so maybe there's hope.

    Three Choices for New Gunwales

I used white pine for the inwales on my stripper and now after a few years of use, there is a little bit of regret. There are a few chips in it when a hard object breaks away a corner. The thin L-shaped and rabbeted ash outwales OTOH are holding up fine. Saved a pound or two with this...

Looking for Wilderness River for Summer 2019

Question for Mr. Recped... IIRC you paddled the Albany, Ontario's largest river at some time in the past, about 1000 kms worth. The last 400 km or so from Limestone Rapids down to Fort Albany require no porting at all again IIRC, except maybe some lining in low water. Would you say this would be...

Now I'm Stressing - NASA Says The Poles Are Swapping Places

Like the NG report states, a magnetic pole reversal might mean that the earth's magnetic field weakens and allows damaging solar radiation in, causing burns, mutations, deformities, crop failures. They say it's overdue but a long time passes between reversals (780,000 years?). A bad CME...

    French River Reviews Please

Algonquin does have reports of campsites being trashed regularly, and ports also have had their share of individuals suffering from rectal pressures of some sort or another and needing immediate, on-the-spot relief.. Restorative measures are regularly taken to un-trash the park with technicians...

    French River Reviews Please

Georgian Bay has been included in UNESCO's system of world biosphere reserves and is in lists like ten best places to be on the water, all kinds of good reviews so popular... I wouldn't miss an opportunity to spend a quiet moment on a freshly-built thunderbox in the pines thinking about how the...

Here you go... French river scenery in two parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCbiWazdRBM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biA9t9rgnBc And a little bit from the Spanish... there is nothing like this on the French. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5iMahT0vhQ Back to werk.

    French River Reviews Please

I've paddled down the French several times... it is not what I'd call a whitewater river. There are rapids on it, but mostly it's flatwater paddling through narrow, lake-like reaches. Not very wild, with cottages and motorboats in places. Most visitors are there during summer, July and August...

    What are you reading?

Yep... wild, crazy dogs in the north, great poem. I can't hope to match that, except maybe with this googled photo of Florida dogs mauling an unfortunate alligator. WARNING... not for the faint of heart. Snowbirds, especially...

    Old Gear Still Using

Same here... the pots are black and dented all over with an aura of hard and rough use about them. I don't fry much and the frying pan that forms the lid looks newer. There's an old Slik aluminum tripod going back to about '70 that still works great. It's been dropped several times and the...

    Modify or start over?

I built my strongback by bolting together 8' pieces of plywood to 16'. It would probably be rigid enough to add on four-foot extensions at each end also with bolts... with another four-foot overlap with the existing strongback to ensure rigidity, so each extension would be eight feet.

    Only Two Seasons

Thanks for your kind words, Erica... I actually bought some of those daylilies by mail order from Florida, Daylily Discounters. Florida plants seem like they'd be tender this far north, they were making claims that they're hardy for even the coldest parts of the states and after 20-25 years up...

    WCPP or Kilarney?

Just a note for Killarney, on the plus side... even though it's overused and crowded, if you can find a place or a time to beat the crowds, the geology of the place makes it different and worth seeing. The quartzite ridges are very old remnants of mountains formed about a billion years ago and...

    Only Two Seasons

Odyssey... hey... zinnias are an idea, and might keep me from spending too much on dahlias, which some zinnias sort of resemble. Still, the dahlias could multiply over the years which zinnias will not, being annuals. Maybe try both. Anyway... some garden pix, mostly daylilies (which I've spent...
