    Steam Bending Questions?

Cruiser, Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to re-think the "press". My attempt at steam bending involved using a bag. Look at this video: It worked great on the first attempt on the Rob Roy. By keeping the wood on the boat while steaming made it much easier and I didn't have to worry...

Poll: Tobacco & nicotine, and canoe stories about use

After an annual trip where one "friend" would "bum" a smoke off me while having plenty of his own packed away I finally got smart and brought roll your own out of a pouch. On the next trip he asked to "bum" a smoke. I tossed him the pouch and said, "Roll your own!" He handed it back to me and...

    Steam Bending Questions?

I wasn't going to jump in on this thread yet but if I can get some good weather days I plan on a big, for me, steam bending project on my Bell Rob Roy. What caught my attention was Cruiser's mention of a 2 sided form for clamping which is what I built in anticipation of bending the wood in one...

Very inexpensive gear that is very valuable

After one trip I included as a eye glass wearer a repair kit including nose pads which are easy to put on but painful if you don't have a replacement.

Materials, parts and pieces you keep on hand in the shop?

I have never seen a staple gun that holds the length of staples that come in the package, as you said hot dogs and buns. Makes no sense to me and I have several packages of short lengths of staples that I won't throw out but know what a PITA it is to load.

Hanging or storing a canoe off floor in a garage with vehicles

Yes indeed I have paddled that boat! Solo once which didn't go so well when the headwind came up! Yeah, you have a lot of work ahead of you with that rebuild! Almost wish I could help!

Materials, parts and pieces you keep on hand in the shop?

Most of what you posted plus what I use a lot is the Dawn/Vinegar 50/50 mix to clean many things, not just hulls. But unlike you my shop is far from the house so a shop fridge is one of the most important pieces of equipment I have and it's always well stocked. One never knows when you'll need...

    How did you learn?

I learned while in Jr. High from a teacher and ex Green Beret with extensive outdoor experience. Most of it was from a 650 mile canoe trip on the Albany River and then a lot of paddling in the Daks. From there it was learning new stuff on my own. I've never paid for a class and don't feel...

A car over a canoe! That is a first for me! Sweet!!!

St. Francis River/North Maine canoe trip video

Done the St. Francis from Estcourt to the St. John twice. It's a nice river to spend some time on. It's not terribly challenging.

    Amazing and memorable events

Spent the night in a tree during a record 17.5' flood. Not a good night!

    YAER (Yet Another Explorer Rebuild)

Algs, I find webbed seats to be far more comfortable then caned seats especially when the crappy cane gives out in the middle of a canoe trip not once but twice and one was brand new. I will never use cane in any of my boats but it's all up to the owner of the boat. Any seats with cane that I...

    Canoe protection clear coat/ epoxy

I'm not a fan of kevlar for patching, just my take on it. I have a variety of different clothes I use. Since it's such a small crack I would be more then happy to send you some Dynel cloth which is my go to stuff for bottom work. Shoot me a PM with your address and I'll have it off in the...

    Canoe protection clear coat/ epoxy

I recently did the bottom of a canoe and quart should be enough. I had about a 1/4 of the cans left when I was done. dougd

    YAER (Yet Another Explorer Rebuild)

Thanks algs, I done 2 inlaid decks with moderate success the boat I am working on has a sweep up so will be leaving the deck, only one, thicker then the gunwales and sand down to meet them. Slow is the key word.

    YAER (Yet Another Explorer Rebuild)

algs, Hope you don't mind but I'm stealing that deck design for a rebuild on a boat I'm working on and most likely future boats. I do like the looks of the walnut gunwales, very beautiful wood. I've never worked with it but do like how it looks on the boat. Thanks for the write up! dougd

Why and Where do you pole?

Gunwale Dancing is what we called when the Thursday Night Canoe Club paddled regularly. I tried jumping from the bottom of the boat to the gunwales but only succeeded in smashing my shins on the yoke! I was a bit luckier at doing the Rock-O-Copter though.

Rebuild of a Mad River Traveler

Chris, When I tried to put on some ash, old gunwales, that curl kept pulling them out at an angle. My thought at the time was to add thwarts, many many thwarts. When I picked up the boat, a 7 hour round trip, it only had the seat in, no thwarts and the gunwales were monster thick. I really...

    Done With It

After 25 years or so of rebuilding other peoples canoes and yes a kayak if I'm allowed to use that word here I've decided to call it quits. Since I rebuilt my shop so it's heated, about 4 years now, I have rebuilt 11 boats in 3 and half years, basically a none stop production line. I've found...
