Removing odor from a blue barrel

Thanks, all. I gave it a good soaking bath with some baking soda, and a little bleach tossed in for good measure. Seems to have worked for the barrel, but the underside of the lid still has a little residual odor to it, so I have a baking soda slurry soaking on it now in the stationary tub. If...

Removing odor from a blue barrel

Picked up a used blue barrel on Ebay, and it has a strong odor like some kind of scented soap on the inside of the barrel and the underside of the lid. Cleaned it a couple of times with a heavy duty degreaser, but I am wondering how to get rid of the scent. I currently have it open in the...

    Sylvania or Craig Lake SP?

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I tweaked one of the bad discs in my neck yesterday, and unless I have a really quick recovery I don't think I'll be able to go anywhere now. :(

    Sylvania or Craig Lake SP?

Intend to base camp. If I recall, you did overnighters at each place recently. Which one would you go back to?

    Appreciation of other folk's gear

That's usually me. I love gathering, sawing, and splitting firewood. When I'm on any type of group/family camping trip, it is something I can do alone.

    Sylvania or Craig Lake SP?

Thanks. I was a little surprised at how many sites were already reserved in Sylvania for the dates I have (Sep 16-19). Looks like about half of them are on walk-in status, but most of the rest are reserved. For now, I've reserved the Chipmunk site, but may end up canceling if I go somewhere...

    Sylvania or Craig Lake SP?

Just realized that I should probably have posted this in the "canoe destinations" forum. Apologies. Maybe admin can move it?

    Sylvania or Craig Lake SP?

Want to do a 3-4 day solo trip in a couple of weeks, and I am trying to decide between Sylvania Wilderness and Craig Lake State Park. I know there are a few WI and MI folks here, so thought I would ask for opinions about which destination would be better. I haven't been to either one before...

Stuff you once took and now do not

My main objection to the pie irons is that you have to bring a loaf of bread, which is too bulky and delicate. My partner loves her pie irons (also known as "pudgy pies," which was a new term for me), so they usually come with us for family camping trips.

Stuff you once took and now do not

Even worse, in my opinion, are those who go to non-electric sites and run a generator. :( Like southcove, my packing list varies a lot depending on where I'm going and who is coming with me. I no longer need to bring diapers for the kid (though I suppose I may someday need them for myself)...

Turtle Flambeau Flowage first canoe trip.

Update: I made it up there for a 3 night solo trip early last week. Plenty of room for overnight parking at Murray's Landing, and very easy to find. There are toilets at the landing, along with garbage and recycle dumpsters, a supply of color maps/brochures of the flowage area, and a "kids don't...

Poll: What percent of the time do you use a double blade paddle solo?

I haven't tried a double blade yet, but I'd like to. Seems like it would be helpful for long distances and/or paddling in wind and waves. Anyone have recommendations for a decent, moderately priced double blade? Maybe I should try to find a place that rents them to try it before buying one?

3 day father & son trip: Haliburton's Frost Centre

Looks like fun. Can't wait until my daughter is old enough to go with me.

    Breakfast ideas

The "best" ones I've found so far are Taster's Choice French Roast (my grocery store carries this in single serving packets, like the VIA), and Medaglia D'Oro Instant Espresso (also carried by my local grocery).

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to pick some up to try next time I am in Madison or Milwaukee.

Turtle Flambeau Flowage first canoe trip.

Confirmed by the DNR ... "Yes, there is overnight parking at Murray’s but no boarding dock. It’s a great area for canoeing."

Turtle Flambeau Flowage first canoe trip.

Hmmm ... I'd have to assume so (but that's usually not a good idea), since I know there are other DNR properties that allow you to park at the boat launches if you are camping in boat-in sites. I emailed the property manager there to confirm, and I'll post here when I get a reply.

    Breakfast ideas

Same here, but to reduce the cost I mix the Starbucks about 50/50 with a much cheaper instant coffee. Still tastes good, but reduces the cost per cup.

Re: Account canoetripping.net Reached Monthly Allowed Executions

That was happening to me, too, so I deleted my browsing history and now the homepage is working for me.
