    Breakfast ideas

Costco had boxes of the Starbucks VIA Columbia on sale this week for $10 or $11 something for 26 packets. My better half picked up two boxes for us last night. They're almost $1 per packet at the grocery store. PS ... I also had a chance to field test another coffee option on my trip last...

The main appeal of Tim Horton's is the coffee and donuts (though I never thought their coffee was very good).

Nice pictures. Looks like a great trip.

    Peshtigo River State Forest (WI)

Those benches are pretty popular around here, and I was thinking the same thing ... I should make some for the patio and backyard.

    Peshtigo River State Forest (WI)

I was trying to trying to turn the bow away from the wind ... the wind and waves were coming from my left side, and I needed to turn to my right, so I was paddling hard on the left side, but it seemed to have no effect.

    Medium sized stuff bags?

I have a couple close to that size, but they came with travel beds for my dog

    Peshtigo River State Forest (WI)

It's a 15' solo (Wenonah Wilderness). I think my main problem with the wind is that the heaviest thing in the canoe by far (me) was right in the middle. A lot of people think the seat in the Wilderness is too far forward, and I am inclined to agree. I might think about moving it back a bit.

    Peshtigo River State Forest (WI)

A few weeks ago, I decided to schedule a couple days off from work at the end of April for a solo camping trip. My camping and paddling season had been cut short last fall with a neck injury, so I was anxious to get out into the woods again and to try out some new gear. I had a few places in...

    Cold Water Safety

Two kayakers died this past weekend in WI. Paddling in Lake Michigan, off the shore of Door County, without PFDs: http://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/door-co/news/2017/04/28/two-men-pulled-cave-point-waters/101033374/

Poll: What percent of the time do you use a double blade paddle solo?

I finally had a chance to try the double blade I picked up last fall. Not my preferred method, but it seems to work wonders heading into the wind. I probably looked like a wounded duck, but it was effective. I'm not sure how long I could do it, though - that's a whole different set of muscles!

    Weather woes

That "improving" forecast took a turn for the worse on the day I was leaving (Thursday). Not only was it supposed to rain all day, but when I watched the morning news they were predicting snowfall for the afternoon. I packed up all my gear and dropped the dog off at the kennel, still not...

    Weather woes

I look forward to that day ... not sure when it will come, but I hold out hope. A full-time job, a young kid at home, and all the other household/yard chores really take a bite out of my recreation time!

    Weather woes

Forecast is improving somewhat, so it looks like I will go. When it is too cold/wet/windy to paddle, I can enjoy gathering and cutting firewood!

    Weather woes

That's how I've been trying to think of it over the past week or so - like a challenge. Part of me wants to just stay home and be warm and dry, but another part knows that I'll only get a chance to schedule 2 or 3 solo trips a season, and if I cancel it may be a couple of months until I can...

    Weather woes

Have a 3-night trip planned for the end of this week, and I've been watching the forecast all weekend. Looks pretty crummy throughout the entire area, and the forecast seems to change quite a bit from day to day. Right now, the most concerning part is the wind, but I suspect the forecast will...

If you want them to stay in place, but be able to remove them later, you might try some double-sided carpet tape

    Wenonah Solitude?

I'm not sure I would feel comfortable adding a kid or dog to the mix with that canoe. You can make adjustments with gear or ballast to keep it trim, but it's where the weight of the kid or dog would be that would concern me. I assume they would have to sit in front of the thwart in the bow...

    Classic sheath knife ideas

I just ordered a Opinel #7 for $10 to give to my daughter. She's only 5 now, but I thought it would be a good first knife for her - particularly with the rounded tip. Probably start letting her try it out under supervision this summer, and see how she does with it.
