Sawyer Glide vs Bending Branches Loon paddle

OP hasn't mentioned stance in the boat or whether he and wife are solo or tandem paddlers. All that said, If sitting they need bents, if kneeling they want straight blades. And, it's worthwhile to remember that the paddle has more effect on control and enjoyment than the boat, and another $25...

    One Square Mile of Hope

Oh, that's simple, just wear dark shorts and pee in your pants, it'll eventually find its way to the bilge, and, with the prevalence of Kev inners, it won't show. Agree totally with the Ys, P and C above. Pinning is an issue, and suppose someone in the middle has a heart attack, seizure. This...

    Tumplines

A couple examples. Tom MacKenzie, wooden and birchbark boat builder who always used tumps was having neck pain a couple decades ago. His Orthopod claimsd he had a45 year old body and a 90 year old neck and he should stop using the tump completely. Cindy Williams, a Canadian tripper and...

single paddle as a sub to double paddle

Any paddle with ribs equally faired into both blade faces will slice cleanly while increasing drag because the surface area of the blade is in the water. Those animal tail things come down to us from the aboriginal paddlers and voyageurs, both of whom made their own sticks with axe and knife...

single paddle as a sub to double paddle

Guys; RapidFire was a unique touring pack canoe when conceived a decade ago. It is Swede Form and features strongly differential rocker and shear. When paddled backwards, the skegged stern will resist drawing turns while the loose, and trailing, bow will skid freely with every injudicious...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

IDMX; The Kee 15 is the next to last in Yost's solo tripper series and includes his stepped bow rocker that improves forward speed It is quite stable for average to large paddlers kneeling, tracks well and is nicely maneuverable. The differential rocker and tumblehome seem ideal for pack...

Shouldered Tumblehome Shouldered Tumblehome First composite use of tumblehome was on some of Bob Demoret's Wabash Valley solos, which became Bells. Yost used the bubble in all the Sawyer and Curtis tumblehomed boats. Gene Jensen and Dave Kruger came up with their own "wing" shapes. Yost's...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

Gavia; The initial press release claimed tumblehome in Serenade, but MRC's web site neither shows nor mentions tumblehome. Maybe it's kinda like ORC's Bell DragonFly, which had tumblehome until it didn't exist at all?? Who knows? Certainly tumblehome would improve pack canoe use, allowing a...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

Having recently received two profanity laced emails from friends suggesting I attempt a modicum of amelioration...... Serenade FlashFire are roughly similar canoes; both ~13' long and 28+"wide. being smallish they minimize surface area and skin friction, and so accelerate quickly; always a...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

Lucky guy! We've over two feet of ice on the lake, with the same wind. Great situation for ponticficating by the fire if the wood holds out but not for much else! I've a mostly complete listing of traditional solo and pack canoe specs if anyone is interested; email charliewilson77@gmail for...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

Roger That! Compare Cross Sections; Shouldered Tumblehome and elliptical bottom verse straight sidewalls with Veed bottom?? Compare Rocker; 2.5 symmetrical verse 1/.5 differential?? Compare Build Quality: Serenade is 2" longer than Flash but 10 lbs heavier because it is Fiberglas from a one...

    Keewaydin 15 Pack boat

MRC's Serenade is 45 lbs almost half again the weight of the Swift which is two feet longer and easily twice the weigh of similarly sized and equipped by NorthStar, Placid, Swift, WeNoNah and three times the weight of minimalist packs by Hornbeck,GRE, Savage, SlipStream. It's ten lbs heavier...

    My foot peg mounting method

In my experience, Velcro can work fine for seats, pegs, etc, but eventually gunks-up with algae, duckweed, grim, etc, and adhesive backing usually fails over time too. 3M's dual lock lasts longer but is harder to acquire and work with. Methacrylate adhesives, Plexus among them, will attach...

    canoe width

Stripperguy nailed it, above, except for adding the more formal "molded" width which, at rails, is the laminate rather than the outer edge of the outwale. He is a casual guy who would be expected to shorten or drop formal appellations.

    Old town discovery 119?

In the pantheon of solo boats the 119 is one of the worst. It's designed to stack for shipping, not paddling. It's very heavy and the seat is misplaced. Lots of better boats can be had at the same price used; a much better place to start.

    appomattox river company??

Very well run shop, attractive location. They did not handle anything I would consider top end gear last time I was through, a decade ago.

Poll: Do you wear a PFD?

We lost one of two drunk fishermen in the states and an Olympic Sprint kayaker in South America last weekend, none wearing PFDs. The first two were impaired but the last was as fit/skilled/whatever as a paddler can get. What questions could possibly remain?

    Do we overthink buying decisions?

John Winters used to claim he could make better choices for customers than they could make for themselves, and, he was probably factually correct, if politically incorrect. It's not exactly a fine line though. Yeah, a real clunker may disinterest someone new to paddling, as much as a finicky...
