Tour owner jailed for 10.5 years for weir drowning deaths of 4 customers

From the BBC: What went wrong? In December 2022 the MAIB published a report on the tragedy aimed at preventing future incidents. It found: The tour leaders were qualified to teach stand-up paddleboarding to beginners and novices in benign conditions but not lead tours on fast-flowing rivers...

Class III in a Mad River Guide

That looks like a good time! It reminded me of a video I watched a while back about airbags. I have never used them, and was quite surprised to see just how effective they could be at displacing water.

Alexandra Conover Bennet Demonstrates the North Woods Paddle Stroke

Thanks for reviving this thread. I have a new stroke to learn and a little stretch of gentle upstream on which to practice. This stroke looks exceeding comfortable

Personal hygiene on extended trips (The Deodorant Debate)

I always take deodorant. I have a very garlic-y BO, which some people find rather offensive. Soap is present, may or may not be used. I take a dip every three days if temperate, daily if I've been sweating a lot. I don't like to sleep grimy.

New Canoe Enthusiast Ready to Learn and Share!

Welcome, Daisy! I don't have any input for the PNW, other than I want to visit BC and do the Bowron Lakes Circuit. I really wish I would have known (believed) there is no one canoe that is truly great for all paddling. I also wish I would have started building my gear stash from lightweight...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

My early learning was mostly YouTube, and mostly Canadian paddlers. Portahj has stuck with me, but only when referring to a canoe carry. Locations and such are Portij. I've recently begun referring to portages as carries, probably because I've been watching a lot of ADK paddling content.

Man, what a great thread. I will likely never do this route, but what a treasure trove of information. You just can't get this from facetubegram.

    easy to cook dinner options

Can confirm. Find some neutral canned chicken that you like, drain well, shred, season, and dry. We have also had luck pressure cooking (basically canning) chunks of whole breast meat and then drying.

    Canadian tariffs and trip food

Ehhhhhh.... Article: "according to resort owners and others who have discussed the issue with Canadian border officials." The actual order appears to continue to exempt foodstuffs brought for personal use. The usual limits on alcohol and tobacco still apply...

    Swift (Re)Introduces the Starfire

Does anyone on the board paddle a StarFire? Willing to share your experience? Bill suggested it at Canoecopia when we were discussing the DF15 being just a touch on the small side.

    Tree Damage

West systems is great. I've used Total Boat (Jamestown Distributors) for all three of my repair orders. I use 4oz or 6oz cloth. There are some great threads on here for walking through repairs. Hemlock would probably also help you out if you give them a ring.

What races are you paddling in 2025?

I will be "racing" my 17yo son on every paddling stint, I am sure.. 😄 No real races, though they seem interesting and fun.

    Spider Cracks

Follow the label directions on your product. I've had it go both ways. The one good thing to come out of nearly destroying my composite Supernova is that I have been able to gain a little bit of experience with repairs of varying severity.
