    It's National Pet Day

Great picture! Almost nothing warms my heart more than seeing a beagle enjoying a canoe ride. It brings back fond memories of the many wonderful hours I spent 45 years ago in my first canoe with my two beloved, hyperactive but attentive, beagles. Thanks for posting the picture, Gumpus, and...

Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit Late Autumn 2024

This is a great trip report of a gorgeous place, SilentWilderness. Thank you for taking the time to put it together and for including so many pictures. It's now on my bucket list! Here is another well-done Bowron report by Explore the Backcountry explorers Brad and Leah Jennings.

    First paddle of 2025

Nice looking boat @Cheeseandbeans! I think you are going to love it. Don't tell anyone but it also paddles exceptionally well with a double blade from the center seat.

3400 km from Lake Erie to the Canadian Arctic Coast

Adam Shoalts is a true explorer and an excellent writer. Where the Falcon Flies is a fantastic book (as are all his books). I highly recommend it.

    First paddle of 2025

I love your pictures, Black_Fly. I also got out yesterday for my first paddle of 2025 with @Swifty, who was taking his new Swift Prospector 14 for its maiden voyage. We were both on the Swift River in Massachusetts in our Swift canoes. It was a great day and a great paddle.

    Moose — Stories, Photos, Videos

I have been fortunate to have many sightings of moose in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Maine, and New Hampshire through the years. Many of these occurred while tripping with a canoe, but my most interesting ones have been sans canoe. One of my most memorable encounters was hunting grouse in...

    Kenco Outfitters

Another shout-out to Kenco Outfitters. I recently ordered a yoke from them online (early morning) and received it the next afternoon via UPS. There was no shipping charge, either. It's hard to beat that for fast service.

    LOTN trip! Weeeeeee!

I got this Facebook post from LOTN the other day. Unless I am mistaken, that is Coldfeet sporting rosy red cheeks and a huge smile in one of the pictures. What a great way to kick off your first winter of retirement. https://www.facebook.com/lureofthenorth

Canoe foot brace - side pegs or cross bar?

I have two canoes with foot bars and three with kayak-style foot pegs. I prefer the foot bars because they allow for more versatility in foot placement. I like Glenn's idea of placing foam pipe insulation on the foot bar. I will have to try it.

    Pillows

I do not use a pillow when I sleep in my Warbonnet hammock. Due to an old back injury, a hammock is the most comfortable way for me to sleep when camping. When I cannot hammock camp and sleep on a pad or cot, I need a pillow to position my neck and spine to limit back pain. Over the years, I...

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

I spent four days in the Floodwood Pond/St. Regis wilderness area in July, and like Tsuga8, I had poor cell service. I relied on my Garmin InReach Mini II to stay connected with my tripping buddies (via their InReach devices) and family at home and get weather forecasts downloaded into the...

    New Bottom Application

From your photo Black_Fly, it appears that your canoe is a Northstar Magic. According to the Northstar website, they only used gel coat during the first few years of production and have since used vinylester resin (https://www.northstarcanoes.com/northstar-rhetoric/skip-gel-coat-yes/)...

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

Pete the Dog's enthusiasm for any outdoor adventure was infectious. As a water-loving Spring Spaniel, his favorite activity was being on the water in our canoe. Sadly, he is no longer with us.

Marshall Lake loop- NW Ontario (July 2024)

Thanks for the excellent and enjoyable trip report, Gamma. Your pictures and writing style are both outstanding. By the way, black flies are really cool creatures once you get to know them;).

Satellite Communicator (Garmin In Reach Mini II) questions.

I have used a Garmin InReach Explorer, the original InReach Mini, and now an InReach Mini 2. I upgraded to the Mini 2 two years ago because of its improved battery life and antennae. I sold the Explorer and Mini to friends, and they are both still in use. I use the InReach for all my outdoor...
