Yes, I agree. I plan on the poplar, but I did buy enough cherry, if I change my mind I can use it for gunnels.

Can’t find any decent ash around here, going to go with poplar for gunwales, yes a bit soft, but harder than cedar, and light. Should be a nice contrast to the WRC. Picked up some cherry for seats and thwart.

So, I’m thinking of doing a seal coat, using Raka 127 with their 350 hardener. Temperature is not of concern, I’m building in a heated garage, so I can crank it up to 85 if needed. My question for those that have worked with Raka, how long of a window will I have from seal coat to glass with...

Yes, I’ve read and re-read your build thread many times. Great information, and one stunningly beautiful canoe you built!

Thanks for all the great feedback, and advice. It is greatly appreciated. Those links from Laughing Loon are very good. I hadn’t planned on doing a seal coat first, but now am thinking I will. I won’t be using system 3 as I already have my epoxy. I’m going to use Raka 127 with the 350 hardener.

Well, stripping is done. Probably bad luck, but I didn’t celebrate the whiskey strip with a shot the night I fitted it. Today I added strips from the shear line to the stems and trimmed them, did the whiskey shot after that. The boat is probably cursed now, we shall see. Now sanding, getting...

Regarding the next time, I must admit it has been a learning process, but I’m really enjoying the process, and have been thinking about the next one. Just don’t want to get ahead of myself. Beating my head against the wall thinking about gunwales. Ash is hard to find around here, been reading a...

I alternated strips the whole way, didn’t cut a centerline. Not sure if I’ll cut centerline, or do it the same next time, that is if there is a next time. Have to see if I survive the fiberglass stage first. 😎

Got the whiskey strip installed last night. Now I need to strip down to the top of the stems. I’m also kicking around the idea of removing the first strip on each side, and replacing with a strip that follows the sheer line, then filling in. Would avoid trimming the sheer line that way.

    Snow, where you are?

Plenty of snow just south of PaddlingPitt here in northwest North Dakota.

Hoping it floats by spring, winter has set in here. Planning on a couple trips this spring, going to do the Little Missouri River, and Yellowstone.

Really appreciate everyone’s help, a great community here! Spent some time looking at other builds here, lots of great info, and beautiful boats. Well I’ve slowly been plugging away, adding strips. Also, have been working on my ugly stems, I have them looking better, but not where I want them...

What a great community! Thanks Stripperguy, Alan, and Roybrew. Not 100% sure how I’m going to deal with my mistakes yet, but love the advice given so far. Think I’ll just continue laying strips down, and deal with it at the end. I have thought about putting in a brass keel strip over the stems...

Oh boy! I figured I’d get a little crap on the bent pushrods. Yes I’m a bit of a Motörhead, wrenching on crap since I’ve been a kid. Had a ‘70 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland. First motor I ever built. Mild cam, headers, Holley four barrel. How was I to know that a stiffer valve spring was in my...
