Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

Great post and great pictures. Thank you for posting. You might want to think about having a few more survival items in your ditch bag, for example a bic lighter and tinder (or small candle.) After a capsize with everything wet and cold it is good to get a fire started asap.

    Hood loop tie downs

The presence of two loops sticking out from under the hood generates more questions about my car than anything else.

    Cooking Fish

When I have had to minimize weight, as someone previously mentioned, I leave the fishing equipment home. I also have boiled fish, in addition to the other methods mentioned. It is good, but be careful not to overcook it. Regarding the weight of the oil: as I am sure you all know, oil has...

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

On the second day of a 2 week trip on the Megiscane River, Quebec, I noticed I was missing my spoon. I knew just where I had set it down, a beach where I had lunch. But it was portages and miles back. Luckily I had another, so no problem. Many years later on the Little Tupper to Lila Lake...

    Dreaded Cancer, Mark III

You all give me great inspiration to keep tripping. (My chronic conditions are no where near as tough as fighting cancer and heart disease.) Thank you.

    Lake Jocassee, SC

In all likelihood, based on your description, Big Bird was an immature Bald Eagle. They do not achieve their distinctive white heads and tails until after their third year. Thank you for the trip report. It’s great to get kids out on the water.

    Source for small adhesive D-rings

I’ve got a bunch of them somewhere. I only needed a few for outfitting the canoe last season. I think I got them on Amazon. An Amazon search turns up lots of them. Or perhaps I am not understanding what you are looking for? D-rings The glue I think depended on the material of the canoe.

How many paddles do you bring on a canoe trip?

For day trips, I take two paddles (solo). Sure, if something happened I could call someone to rescue me, but do I really want that embarrassment? For wilderness tripping I take three (solo). I have broken a paddle in white water, but as we (tandem) took three paddles, we were fine. I've also...

    Lower Yellowstone river

There are also white pelicans in south Florida for sure, especially in the Everglades. I have seen them in great numbers off Flamingo.

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

I paddled a Colden Dragonfly on my trip last summer on the Cree River in SK. I found it to be an excellent loaded tripping boat and it rides the waves beautifully. It wants to be paddled from a kneeling position and I have found it the most comfortable canoe to paddle all day without changing...

    Photo of the day

I took a private lesson or two from William Dupree a year or two ago. I agreed. He was an excellent teacher. My strong preference is for stern, so if we ever get into the same area, we can paddle tandem. :)

    Cree River Summer 2023

You did identify it when I visited you post-trip. I have the information, just not right at hand. It's the one with all the various uses. Edit. I looked it up. Here is the photo of the listing from your book.

Cree River Section 5 Sometimes the best maps will not guide you. You can't see what's round the bend. (Bruce Cockburn, Pacing the Cage) Here, the trip report takes a turn. For six weeks at least I have been unable to find my maps and the cut out section from the Archer book...

    Cree River Summer 2023

The Zoleo is supposed to give you a topo map of exactly where you are. But on the Cree River, the Zoleo said it had no information and just showed me a blank. Apparently one can get far enough off the beaten track so the Zoleo can't place you on the map.

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River Summer 2023 - Part 6 August 23, 2023 OK, I got ahead of myself. One should check ahead on the notes before announcing a challenge like my first rapids, which to be honest was more like a riffle with a bitty V down the center. I have sore muscles and a certain internal fatigue. I...

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River Summer 2023 - Part 5 In the previous installment we left our heroine confused at an island in Cree Lake. But before we continue, I have to go back a bit. This is August 22, 2023. My plan is to follow the shoreline up to the point of the peninsula where the fish camp is said to be...

Of beavers, wolves, and forested wetlands.

Well, dipping back deep into granduate school learning - it only makes sense that traveling far from safety would be more risky for the prey than staying closer to water. I'm glad there's a study to demonstrate that, but it can't have been a surprise.

    Cree River Summer 2023

Unfortunately when I was there Als Place was not open. The Waterfront Lodge is reportedly the best place, but they were not open or not taking guests when I was there.
