    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River, Part 10 September 3, 2023, Sunday. Again in this narrative, I'm going to be inadvertently mixing up September 2 and 3. Yesterday (the 2nd) was a long day for me and I was too exhausted at the end of the day to write. There were many rapids, but also a troublesome gusty wind. At one...

    Cree River Summer 2023

August 31, 2023 - Part 9 Thursday, I think. Yesterday was exciting. First on the schedule was a Class II ledge running across the river with sneaks on RR and RL. It occurs after a sharp turn to the left. Supposedly there is an RI running into it which occurs after a sharp turn to RL. I've been...

    In praise of cheap binoculars.

I was content with my standard $35 binoculars (50 years ago) until someone lent me a much, much better pair. Two blue birds I had been watching and just barely seeing them suddenly jumped so close I could see the feathers. It was amazing. Fifty years later, I have bought a pair of really good...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

I agree. I've run into places where no apparent portage is visible from the water and you know there must be one because there is a 50 ft drop coming just ahead. Like Jdeerfoot, I found portages at the last possible place to exit before going over the falls. I discovered this by getting out way...

spray cover without snaps or velcro

There is now heavy duty velcro with heavy duty adhesive on one side and heavy duty velcro on the other. I used it to make a bow cover of Tyvek from my Colden Dragonfly before heading out on the Cree. Lots of WW and spray and dunkings later, the Tyvek was falling apart around the velcro which...

    Cree River Summer 2023

Welcome, Marrea. I'm not finding a part 4, but part 5 starts on this page: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/cree-river-summer-2023.128726/page-2 And just keep reading through. I am still working on it. I hope to post more this week.

    Canoe Tents

I've seen a bunch of these kinds of canoe tents on Pinterest. If I can figure out how to move photos from there to here, I'll do that. Some are different designs. I have a couple of times thought I was going to have to sleep in the canoe...mostly in marshy areas. Always lucked out at the last...

Clearance Sale at White Rose Canoe (Newbury, MA)

Thanks. I thought it might have been my computer/browser or whatever since I have spent all morning on those kinds of problems. :(

Clearance Sale at White Rose Canoe (Newbury, MA)

I can't seem to find the prices posted anywhere, except for the canoes. All the gear...no prices. Any suggestions? I've tried another browser. Same thing. I'm sorry to see them go. :-(

US dugout canoes as old as the Pyramids

It’s amazing how old some of these dugouts are. When I was in school, we learned about the pyramids, but never about American pre-history. I rode in a dugout canoe in Costa Rica and saw more on the shore filled with mountains of bananas. A direct connection to ancient peoples.

which foldable solar panel for canoeing and canoe camping

This is the one I used on a three week trip in Saskatchewan. It was great. I had an iphone, Zoleo, and two power banks for cloudy days. Even on cloudy days it would do some charging, but if it is raining, no.

    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River 2023, Part 8 Still in August 28...a day with no end. I need to write a little about this river and the canoe. The river bottom is composed almost entirely with round rocks and irregular shapes with the average being about the size of grapefruits. There is no place to put a foot...

    Pants with knee pads

I've been doing this for years and years. The main problem is that the mat gets wet in the canoe and then isn't much fun to kneel or sit on and it also picks up a lot of sand.

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

I wish I did. I was young enough then I thought I would remember all this. I know we came in on a side river that joined with the Hudson and we pulled out at a nice park. I know we went past the Blue Ledges, but only because I was told that. The water was moving much too fast for me to pay...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have an old RX MR Explorer. One thing I like about it is there is plenty of room in the bow. The Mohawk fiberglass tandem has barely enough bow space to squeeze into. I also have a 13 ft Mohawk solo that is quite useful. I'd say it's the boat I use most often. I've also a 15 foot Mohawk...

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

The fun starts at about 39 seconds. Falling over in the Ardeche My impression is that I do not want to ride in one of those plastic bumper cars. I can't imagine having any control over the boat. I don't know if there is any difference in the boats, but some paddlers are using single blade...

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

I'm planning a trip to Europe this spring and wanted to paddle some of the rivers there with rented equipment. I can't bring everything on a plane, least of all a canoe. The latest thing in canoe rentals (besides kayaks, of course) are sit-on-top canoes. They seem to be made of some...
