    Cree River Summer 2023

Cree River, Summer 2023. Paddling Pitt, isn't it nice to know you were correct the first time? ;) The big excitement for this rest day is pancakes! I bring my own mix of whole wheat flour, powered milk, powdered eggs, sugar, and baking powder. Just add water. In all these years, I have never...

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

The Mad River Explorer gets my vote, for all the same reasons already listed. I don’t like the bucket seats of the Winona. I’m not sure what model I had, but the Winona did not handle well in the wind.

Happy Birthday, Glenn. I hope I am around on my 80th for a new final canoe.

    Balancing weight and durability

Just paraphrasing Davidson and Rugge here but, when you're out in the wilderness those six $100 bills are just paper and they won't even start a fire.

One canoeing website in Switzerland recommended the River Ruess through Lucerne, stating this was easy and recommended for families. Google Earth, Aslowhand and now a personal observation shows this is not a river for families or canoes. The website did say care should be taken to avoid the...

    Gators and kids

In general, gators see a canoe as a bigger gator and cede to it. And upright adults appear too large to be prey. But children - please keep them away from the edges of any body of water. And keep in mind that when an adult crouches down to, say, wash his or her hands, he or she suddenly appears...

Trip Report: Lac de Joux, Switzerland

Aslowhand and I drove for several hours into the French part of Switzerland to paddle on Lac de Joux. The paddle in to this favorite camp, turned out to be idyllic and eventful. Here are the stony put-in, you can see the French influence in the change in architecture, Swiss Chalets have been...

Trip Report: Kander River Delta, Switzerland

We launched from Kanu Klub Thun put-in. I also had a borrowed life jacket from them. It is the most comfortable and secure life jacket I've ever worn, but it can only be used paddling tandem because I cannot get the belts and buckles fastened or unfastened without assistance. There are no...

Trip Report: Kander River Delta, Switzerland

[Admin note: I have moved the following two posts by @Erica into their own thread in this forum from the Photo of the Day thread.] For lack of any better place to put a Swiss Trip Report, I will post a few photos here instead of a full report. Also, they may not be in order because I am tired...

It's easy. I told him my iphone battery died. Well, not really, but it does help to ask in person. BTW, Glenn, if you want Aslowhand to post about Switzerland, you have to give him a category to put the thread in. (IMO) We have spent a half an hour trying to figure out where to put a trip...

    Cree River Summer 2023

It is not willows. Give me some credit for my old botany degree. ;) Anyway, you were the one who helped me identify it by its characteristic smell. But of course I could be wrong. I do know it was not alder and not willow. I would love to be corrected if necessary. I’ll try to find some closeups...

    Photo of the day

Aslowhand and I paddled on Lake Brienz today. The silt from the glacier melt gives the water a turquoise color. The weather was perfect. Very little wind. Switzerland is fantastic.
