    Swift Prospector 16 Combi

Year old thread, but wonder if OP got his canoe and his first impressions. How’d you decide between the prospector and the keewaydin? Thinking about trading in my NC Prospector 16 and pulling the trigger on a Keewaydin 16 Combi. Bought the prospector with the idea of the symmetrical hull...

    Canoecopia 2023

If I recall correctly and heard correctly the rep I was taking to said that checkerboard pattern was a $2k option.

    Canoecopia 2023

Can’t believe how good of a time I had. Wife and I stopped in on Friday, walked the floor a couple times. Was always tentative about Helinox chairs being too fragile. It was good to try them out since I’m not a particularly small guy. Ended up buying 2 chairs. Stopped in on Saturday...

    Canoecopia 2023

Starts tomorrow and winter is giving this area another smackdown starting tonight. 5” of heavy wet stuff and another 2” Saturday. Shouldn’t be bad but all depends how on the ball the snowplows are. Last few snows they seemed to have already checked out for the season and many roads were...

    Camping Outside in Winter! Why?

Did one night in Jan when I was a kid just to say I did it. It was a miserable experience. Our old dome tent didnt have good ventilation and was soaking wet with condensation. It was dripping from the tent walls like it was raining. Some time after midnight I couldn’t stand being damp and...

Fibbing To Your Spouse About Canoe Stuff

Wife doesn’t bat an eyeball on my canoe/camping expenditures. She’s content, not deprived in any way and gets to enjoy use of that stuff too. House is maintained, bills paid. However, I’ve got a much more expensive hobby that makes canoe stuff look like pocket change. I never fib about any...

    10 Scary Rescue Videos

Due to my scuba diving connections I got recruited to volunteer on the safety team for whitewater kayak racing. Was stressful covering my assigned section of the course hoping none of the participants needed rescue. One time I got stationed at the bottom of a falls, fairly technical section...

    How did you learn?

Been canoeing since I was a kid and just figured it out. Always been intuitive to me. Only in the last few years I got more active with canoeing and started studying it. Watched some YouTube videos and learned all these strokes had names. I can make the canoe do what I want but I’m humbled...

    Wolves

Last fall I had a wolf visit my camp at night. Was unaware until I saw the fresh tracks on the shoreline the next morning. Hearing some wolves howling while camping is a bucket list item for me. As long as the howls are distant and not danger close.

    $$$$$

It’s a hobby. Hard to really but a price tag on that. Good gear is expensive and learned now that quantity gear can make things much more enjoyable. Was floored by the costs of a quality canoe at first. But now seeing how they are pretty much handmade one at a time. No automation or mass...

    Solo - fears and boredom

I don’t consider it solo camping if you bring a dog. That’s definitely a companion and helps watch your back as well. I wonder if YouTubers really feel like they are solo when talking to their camera. Bet it feels like there’s 1000’s of people watching you at that moment…even if you are...

    Blankets?

Thanks for the tip. I never looked into the quilt concept before, don’t know why. Since made an effort to learn about them. Did some research and believe the Zenbivy light bed system just might be my ticket. Will order one as soon as they get them back in stock.

    Solo - fears and boredom

I didn’t solo last year, did once the year before that prompted me to ask the question. Planning a trip in May that I’m thinking will be solo.

    Snake Stories

That’s the benefit of living in the northern, cold climates….less venomous creepy crawlers. Saw a video on YouTube of a huge timber rattler from an area I frequently car camp with the family. I recognized the exact spot in the trail from the video. That made me a bit uncomfortable.

    Why Buy A New Canoe?

Back when I was in the market the only canoes I found for sale in my area were cheap brands that were absolutely beat to heck. Some looked so abused I questioned their seaworthiness. Buy new, get exactly what I want and be the one that puts all the scratches and gouges in it.

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

Mostly a Klymit air mattress. I’ve also got a hammock and a Tentsile tree tent. I go back and forth but mostly like the room and simplicity of a tent on the ground. Hammock doesn’t have much protection from weather and just a cocoon for sleep…feel very vulnerable in the backcountry. It is...

    Blankets?

I use both a sleeping bag and a small blanket. I’m not a small guy and have yet to find s sleeping bag that fits my shoulders. I can get and bag up to my armpits, then cover the rest of me with a blanket.

What to use for an inside ground sheet (and how to use it)?

I use the ‘footprint’ commercially made for my tent. I use it inside and debated this quite a bit. To me it seems like I would not want it outside as it would then trap water between bottom of tent and footprint.
