    More grocery store options.

I’ve used the canned chicken before for making chicken quesadillas. It’s ok but all the canned/preserved meat has a ‘tuna-like’ flavor to it. I can burn off/sanitize a can of lingering odors better than a pouch. I use the pouches of tuna all the time for work lunches. Never took them...

    Northern WI wolf attack

So similar to coyotes. Think in the case of coyotes if the Alpha male gets taken out it becomes an all out **** as low status males who normally didn’t have breeding rights seize the opportunity. All the females end up pregnant before order is once again restored in the pack.

    Northern WI wolf attack

Black bears really aren’t hunters, mostly lazy omnivores so it’s typical they just want to raid your picnic basket and want nothing to do with you. So far no followup to this story that I could find. Wolves shouldn’t be territorial at this time of year. They can be protective of dens when...

    Northern WI wolf attack

Not sure whether these were purebred wolves, hybrids, or Chupacabras is really the issue. Issue is we have some wild predatory animals who are getting brazen enough to provoke uncomfortable encounters with humans. Why? We can speculate maybe they just want belly rubs, or maybe they are...

    Northern WI wolf attack

WI wolf incidents Digging a little bit shows theres more. Curious about the details of the Adams county incident. Seems they were quick to rule self defense and close that file.

    Northern WI wolf attack

A member on another forum I frequent claims to know one of the witnesses. Said the kids did not have a dog.

    Northern WI wolf attack

Hope the DNR biologist gives an explanation for this behavior rather than just letting this story quietly fade away. Honestly makes me a bit uncomfortable. If these wolves are brazen enough to surround 3 hunters they certainly wouldn’t hesitate to move in on a solo camper. Kid showed more...

    Northern WI wolf attack

No mention of a dog, but that would make more sense. Being a group of teenage hunters I’d be impressed if they actually had a trained retriever with them. Probably just a borrowed pair of waders to retrieve their ducks and decoys.

    Arborist throw bag?

Can you just carry an empty bag and put some rocks/sand/gravel in it when you need to use it?

    Northern WI wolf attack

Wolf attack Is near one of my frequent camping spots so guess not a bad idea to have a self defense plan. Pack of wolves surround and aggressively close in on some duck hunters. One hunter killed one of them with a shot to the head with 12 ga duck load at about 5 yards. The behavior of these...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

No, I mean with a hammock your protection is literally just a flat tarp you set up. This is opposed to a rainfly which is made to and form fitted to a tent. Because of that the tent with rainfly has better odds of keeping you dry in a driving rainstorm.

    What are you reading?

Just started reading this. So far the information doesn’t seem particularly useful. It’s one of those things where you think, “Yeah, I noticed that but never spent time thinking about it”. Guess the purpose to is get you to just be more observant. Theres a reason things are the way they are...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

Storms are another thing to feel vulnerable about. Hammocks being off the ground is nice knowing I won’t end up in a pool of water. Should be high n’ dry. The tarps don’t offer as much protection as a tent’s rainfly. Already had to get up in the pouring rain at night to readjust the tarp...

    Solo - fears and boredom

Think the issue here is really the mind manifesting fear as a result of being alone. Likely an evolutionary survival mechanism from back in the days when early humans routinely faced mortal threats. Those that were a little more ‘alert’ when alone and preferred the safety in numbers faced...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

This was in my suburban back yard. Probably either the Robins that nest under our deck or the doves that like to nest in our hanging flower baskets.

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

Think in some other thread a member mentioned that they actually had an animal walk under their hammock and bump them. Can you imagine a porcupine? Few weeks ago I had a deer trip on my tarps guyline. Shook the tarp violently and jolted me awake. But that can happen in a tent too...

Night Fears: Worse with Hammocks than Tents?

The answer is yes. I definitely feel more vulnerable in a hammock. For the reasons you mentioned but also because you are kind of restrained. You don’t have that freedom of movement a tent allows. An animal can literally bite you in the a$$ at anytime and all you could do is squirm around...

    Solo - fears and boredom

Been a couple years since I started this thread. I’ve done a lot more solo camping since. Find I need to have a mission. Whether it’s fishing or hunting for a meal, exploring, etc. The day’s go by really fast as I find lots to do…even if I just sit watching clouds for an hour, make my 87th...

    Pandemic Changed Things

All this makes me think there’s soon to be a glut of barely used recreational gear out there ready to hit the resale market. I have noticed my local reservable sites are more open. I seem to no longer have any issues booking the site I want, when I want it. Especially now that fall is...
