Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Does alcohol burn longer than white gas per volume?

    An Alternative, Alternative Fuel

Last trip I was wind bound for D A Y S. Some of it rainy. My standard stove has been a twig stove, with a butane canister backup. On the promontory I was camped, something unusual and unexpected happened: I ran out of forest litter. Then there was the wind, which I dealt with in the usual...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

What’s the efficiency of alcohol stoves? Do they operate on rubbing alcohol?

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Not sure why a twig stove would be banned. It’s all contained and you’re sitting right there. Plus, you’re cleaning up potential wildfire fuel. A campfire is a whole other risk level.

    What are you reading?

I enjoyed both, but agree about The Dog Stars being the better book.

    Things you've lost or misplaced on a canoe trip . . .

I misplaced my glasses, only had Rx sunglasses the whole trip and several days afterwards. Found them while cleaning the car days after getting home.

Stuff you don't need or hardly ever use, but you bring anyway

    • I used to carry a pistol. Glad I had it at times, never needed it. • A bow saw. Always have one, rarely need it. • Excess clothing. • Excess granola. • A folding shovel. •. A fish grate 😩.

What was the worst canoe you ever owned or paddled?

Coleman. Waste of money. Too heavy to load, impossible to paddle alone. Used it on a small farm pond with my young children.

    Motorized Canoes

My only experience is with a small motor mounted on the side of a tandem, on the Green River Lakes. I was guiding someone who didn’t want to walk around the lower lake to get to the upper lake and the canyon. Wind was…well, like Wyoming wind on the west face of the Wind River range. Going...

    How Bad Is My Paddling?

I did a speed test going solo using the goon, J stroke, and sit and switch moving into a slight current and then back. The fastest (and most tiring) stroke was the straight switch. Next, the goon, which got me there quicker but was a little more tiring than the J stroke, but more effective...

Need New Tricks for Lightening the Food Barrel

Now that I’m old and weak, the only way to extend my tripping career is to get serious about food weight. Meals are easy to lighten up, just go dehydrated. What confounds me are snacks and lunch. Granola, bread, salami, cheese, candy bars, granola - all heavy. I can do dehydrated fruit, but...

    Ballast for Wind, Current

If you get it trimmed correctly, an even current will spin you sideways and you’ll stay sideways down the stream. At least that’s what I noticed. That’s what I try for, not considering wind, which varies in direction and can be adjusted moving weight forward or aft.

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I doubt anyone here just sits waiting for bed. Unless there’s clear skies, I generally read, go to bed early, wake up early. It’s my natural circadian rhythm. Star watching is fun for a spell, staring into a fire can be nice, listening to the loons and other night sounds, but I’m not...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Well, I’d be interested in knowing how many solo trippers use fires to cook regularly. Since I’m alone with my dog (he is terrible about camp tasks although he does bring me his bowl for dinner), all the chores fall on me. Easy to collect ground litter for the twig stove, but I have to be...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

I cook with a twig stove mostly, maybe have one campfire on a week trip.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

Kimbers are nice, owned a few. Always removed the series II safety. One less thing for the trigger to do. I’ve been a 1911 guy since my military service. Built several of them. Had a concealed carry license for 20 years, trained monthly at minimum until my son moved away. Don’t carry much...

    Favorite camp chair

I’m a Helinox user for years. Tried the big Agnes mica basin chair and it was so much more stable and comfortable I’m definitely interested in upgrading, even though reducing weight has been my obsession snd its as tad heavier than the chair zero.

Bad back and purchasing a new lightweight canoe

Good idea to paddle. Give it a good go. If you fish, try casting and rebaiting, changing lures. Pull a fish in if you can. Elbow room and stability are important. Getting into a backpack, removing and stowing a shirt, lots of things you want to be comfortable doing. 14’ seems small. For...

    Northern WI wolf attack

People don’t respect wilderness rules, especially at the state levels. Mountain bikes, ATVs, trail clearing, many prohibited activities are left to the discretion of the local DNR ranger. If rangers grew up doing those activities, possibly in the same area, they won’t enforce the rules. Even...

Bad back and purchasing a new lightweight canoe

Hey Tim, I have a bad back too, throw in two junky shoulders. I didn’t catch your size, but part of your criteria should include the durability necessary for your paddling. UL Kevlar is fine if lakes are all you paddle, just get a boat that will hold you and your gear, and is sea worthy. If...
