River and Lake Canoe Discussion and Input

One of the neat things about Kevlar is ease of repair. The Expedition Kevlar from Swift is a fine stream canoe material, and it’s lighter than plastic.

Kayak vs Canoe - Your Personal Pros and Cons

I own a Yak, mostly for guests, and in case I don’t want to beat my canoe to death on a low stream. If I lived near the ocean or closer to Superior, I might own an ocean kayak.

    Where’s Yellowcanoe?

I understand, but we still love hearing from you. My age is showing too. I’m contemplating hanging up my tripping hat and focusing on day trips. But I still hope. Hearing from you makes me miss it less, and I always like to learn from sage paddlers. Someday, I hope to paddle in Maine...

    Defend your food barrel?

I bought a 12 ga years ago, anticipating a trip to white bear country that fell through. The trip never materialized, my health declined, so I have no use for this equipment, unless of course, we are attacked by Greenland or Canada, in which case I’ll defect and fight on their side 😉.

    Where’s Yellowcanoe?

I haven’t seen any posts by YC in some time. Anyone heard from her?

    Merry Christmas 2024, Canoe Trippers!

    Merry Christmas to all!

    What are you reading?

How many have trouble staying awake while reading? It’s exasperating. Probably related to poor sleep at night, or maybe just brain age.

What height boots do you prefer?

I wear high unlined LaCrosse rubber boots when beaches are available, especially if in Ohio waters which are effluent rich. I wet foot elsewhere in the summer. If paddling in cooler temperatures, I add warm socks. Schnees pack boots in winter, Keen Dry boots for snowshoeing.

    Whistling Away Wolves

How quickly can you get a bear banger deployed from a pocket?

    Whistling Away Wolves

Warmer temperatures brought a nice 2” snowfall last evening. Boges and I went for a hike to see what the critters were doing at night, hoping to see some wolf prints. No wolves, but it was a peaceful, relaxing trip. I carried a small pistol. My chest holster is really too small to go over a...

    What are you reading?

Yes, men of all races did horrible things to each other, without reason and to innocents. Treaties were never written to be followed. Extermination was an overt goal, particularly in Texas, even with regard to peaceful tribes. All very disturbing. It all reminds me of the Middle East today...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

I’ve learned that HABs dramatically increase with the proximity of megafarms, where enormous numbers of animals are kept (often under roof). The fields cannot absorb the massive amounts of manure being produced and spread on local fields as fertilizer. We lost the Totogatic to paddling...

    Checking the Mailbox

It is a bit blurry. Probably fogged the lenses. Those are Schnee pack boots, can’t remember the model (elk hunter?). Wool boot socks, pants, wool anorak, WoolX balaclava, Smith Rx goggles, a shearling bomber hat, Kinko leather work gloves over fingerless wool gloves, wool sweater and merino...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

What about #2? Pacific Islanders did it all in the surf. Better than pit toilets, which leach into the lakes and streams anyway? Big savings on maintenance, and none of those white flagged minefields around popular campsites like those in Quetico.

    What are you reading?

Well, I’m now reading Empire of the Summer Moon. This is the 2nd time I’ve read it but it seems fresh. I’m also reading Dog Stars (Heller) that I’ve also read before, but didn’t remember reading until I bought it for my reader. Still good, I remember very little. I have a Follet series and...

    Checking the Mailbox

Just testing out my cold gear before serious snow gets here. Everything was good except my fingertips. I’m going to look for an over mitten and some new waterproof gloves. My wool balaclava doesn’t fog my goggles at all, just sun glasses.

    Winter Accessories

The pigskin model with the stripped fabric on the back have been my favorite for 25 years, but can’t find them locally any more.

    Winter Accessories

My favorite insulated chore gloves are the pigskin ones they sell at hardware stores. Or used to sell. Haven’t seen them in years. I bought some kinkos leather ones a couple years ago and they’re not the same. I think everything is now made cheaper.

    Winter Accessories

I’m breaking out my snowshoeing gear, and it’s time to replace a couple items. I know some, like me, venture out up north to stay in canoe tripping shape. One item I’ve never been satisfied with is my face protection. I’ve been using a wool gator, but I fight fog on my glasses unless I use...
