Best canoe dog for wolf protection

I think I have his sister.

Best canoe dog for wolf protection

Cattle dogs are tough and amazingly quick. Better biters than collies. Fast in and out. One wolf would run away from a couple cow dogs. A pack of wolves would be dangerous for the dingos.

Another Toxic Train Situation in Ohio

The Great Miami River valley is being filled with toxins from yet another train mishap. They’re spraying it down, so much of it will hit the river. Just another day in paradise. I used to roam that valley as a child. It was toxic then too. I remember fish there were were deemed inedible...

    New Bottom Application

Ah, I have some resin and MKEP. I think it came from Northwest canoe. I’ll see if it’s the right stuff. I see they use rollers to apply. Can’t remember if I used a roller or not. Low nap roller, likely.

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

I’d say Maine. Ely is too crowded nowadays.

New State Park on Little Miami River

The Great Council State Park is located on the site of the old Chillicothe village, a main village of the Shawnee people before removal of tribes to places west of the Mississippi. Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Simone Kenton, William Henry Harrison, Tecumseh, Cornstalk all figure...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I loathe the fire pits in BWCA. The grates make it hard to have a proper fire. A swinging grate over a pit is much more useful.

My favorite piece of camping gear

I’m very happy with my CCS lightweight tarp. Hunkered down in my tent with Bogan during a thunderstorm, I was sure my tarp would be toast, likely out in the lake. I’ve had this tarp a while, it’s very light compared to my old tarp. It rides the wind beautifully. Loops are stronger than I...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I rarely make a fire when alone, unless conditions and mood are appropriate.

    New Bottom Application

Oh, that may be. NC sent me this for another boat I no longer own (blue steel), thought I’d use it. I do have resin as well. Which is best- lighter, more durable?

Adhesion of G/Flex to marine paint?

Yes, sand it. I’d use an orbital and 220 grit.

    New Bottom Application

BWCA66: Because that’s what I was repairing and sanding? Intend to keep it thin, of course. What are you spraying, polyurethane?

    New Bottom Application

Magic needs some TLC. What is the best way to apply gel coat? I think I used a sponge brush last time.

    Pandemic Changed Things

For those of us in the Midwest, the Boundary Waters was the go to wilderness canoeing experience. Since the pandemic, permits have been very scarce. Used to be, last minute changes to entry date or entry point could easily be accommodated. Now, if plans need to change or should change (for...

    Hatchet or Saw?

My camp was on an outcropping of rock, mostly cedars. The area burned in 2006. Forest litter was enough for 3 or 4 boils, then very scarce. I did plan on doing the baton thing, but the only decent wood was some split birch logs left by the fire pit. They could have been done with the bc knife...

    Wind threshold

I wish I had looked closer at the wind forecast. Being wind bound for 5 days without decent opportunities for exploring and fishing was terrible, a waste of $ and time. Next time, I’m doing this too. I was just too thrilled with getting a permit and getting out for the first time in years...

    Favorite camp chair

I got a Helinox Chair Zero after using the Chair One for a few years. The difference in weight is noticeable, but I still must pack the sand foot with me. I think the heavier chair was a little more stable. My chair is more comfortable if there’s someplace to elevate my feet.

    Hatchet or Saw?

Might be faster than chop and split. Never splintered it that way before.
