Need New Tricks for Lightening the Food Barrel

I keep all my meals real simple, especially on my solo trips. The heaviest item for lunch would be peanut butter on Wasa Bread crackers (my long fav Ryecrisp is no longer available) w/jelly or honey. I start watching the peanut butter/honey/jelly jars at home to try to save out the partials with...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

This is why I learned to like chaperoning BWCA trips with my wife’s church youth group. I would always take the group which was all high school aged guys. Simple challenges such as “who can take this pack and a canoe (they were all aluminum boats) all the way through the portage?” Very quickly...

Trap Lines North Fans....I've got something cool

This story reminds of my rescue of ALL of the Wabakimi Project section sheets used by Uncle Phil on his project trips 2004-2018. Each trip had 2 sets of maps, one for each boat. To save space and weight (?) Phil cut off the borders/legends of each map. The final year of trips was 2018. Phil died...

Another new camping trend - individual tents

I appreciate all the responses and various perspectives. After 50+ years of camping/canoe camping this trend is new to me and three different groups I have tripped with in recent years.

    Sylvania Wilderness 101

I have been going to Sylvania for 50 years. Consider it to be Boundary Water lite. It is a relatively small area, something under 20,000 acres. It was formerly a longtime private hunting/fishing club so it is unique in that it is one of the few virgin never logged forests in the Upper Midwest...

Another new camping trend - individual tents

The last several years the groups I travel with have been taking individual tents. On the trip in August on crown land west of Wabakimi, we had five tents for six people. In the Wabakimi area this can be problematic since there are few campsites and many of them are small. We spent most of our...

Kevin Callan: Death of the Campfire

Always if no fire ban. But I travel mostly in the north woods of the upper Midwest and the boreal forests of Ontario and Manitoba so there is never any shortage of firewood. The evening campfire is the social gathering spot on all trips. In 50 years of tripping I only traveled with one partner...

Interview: A 60 day trip in the Canadian arctic

Interesting story. I would be interested in reading a more detailed account - book maybe.

Two nights in the rainy, cold St. Regis Canoe Area, ADKs

Nice photos. Your trip reminds me of my August trip to Ontario - after 3 nice days we had 3 days of wind, rain and 50 degrees temps while wind bound on a small island.

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

The advice to book your train reservation early (especially the boat/gear in the baggage car) is probably a good idea. We last did this in 2017, probably 4-5 months before the trip. And I do remember the baggage car was quite full when we boarded in Armstrong headed for Allenwater Bridge. I...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Gamma, thanks for the update. I was wondering what you found out about coming off the railroad. Stick with Jonah, he will likely be a great source of info - he is a very helpful guy. I wouldn’t read too much into what Bruce told you (or how he seemed to sound). His medical condition has impaired...

    Small Leather Pouches

I have several Royal Crown bags from my bag piping days. They were standard equipment ditty bags for pipers.

    Northern WI wolf attack

Sorry to hear this. I really enjoyed my time on the Albany. We paddled it for 3-4 years starting in 2009 with Wabakimi Project. I have always thought it would nice to go back for another trip.

    More grocery store options.

I have used MRE's in the past when I was given some by active duty relatives who have since retired from the military. As I recall they contained a lot of calories per pouch and I really liked the miniature bottles of Tabasco sauce that were often included.

    More grocery store options.

I remember reading in the Lewis & Clark journals that they learned to use trade goods with the Indians for dogs which their group really liked because the wild game they mostly ate lacked much fat and the dog meat provided it.

Nice video - could be used for tourist promotion purposes.

    Mohawk Intrepid 16 worth repairing?

This boat has definitely seen better days. Is it worth the drive? I suppose you could take it and work on it, it would a learning experience. But you would probably be happier finding something used for sale at a modest price so you can get out paddling now. This looks like the kind of boat that...
