What is your most DISLIKED tree and why?

Do Devil's club and alder count? They are the bane of PNW and SE Alaska land travel ("don't get off the boat!").

What is your favorite tree and why?

It's a scan of a 35mm slide, then compressed. Not much detail there.

What is your favorite tree and why?

Two favorites: whitebark pine because I love the western high country, and the sugar pine of the Sierras. For those of you unfamiliar with the sugar pines, they're the ones with the 12" + inch cones, and get huge. I had an owl observation blind in one in Yosemite that was about 8 feet dbh...

    Paddling deaths increased in 2023

They're probably headed to Yellowstone next to pet the bison.

    Paddling deaths increased in 2023

Another recent (and more local to me) paddling fatality:Teton paddling fatality. I've spent a lot of time on Jackson Lake, and it can be formidable, even in a 17' Boston Whaler.

    PFD Zipper vs Buckles

Yep, I'm a believer. Some years back I went over in an innocuous setting without my PFD (goofing off--calm, shallow, other paddlers almost in arms reach), I was really surprised how difficult it was to put the PFD on (Seda zipper). I learned something after 40 years paddling.....

Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

On my trips north I've used a waterproof scabbard, with the opening towards me just in case it's needed while in the boat (and under the spray deck if used). On shore it comes out of the case, and I air out the case just in case(?). It's a roll-top soft Kolpin case they don't make any more...

Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

You can save a lot on waste by creating your own meals using ingredients rather than pre-packaged stuff. My normal trips are 4-6 weeks, commonly with lots of portages. It all adds up.

Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

One thing I do to save volume and avoid camp waste is to rebag everything in produce bags--they are very lightweight/low bulk, and reasonably strong (double bagged). You can buy a roll from your market for a few dollars. I just tie them closed in a loose overhand knot. I usually put all meal...

Clipper Sea 1 would be worth looking into also, and in the neighborhood (southern B C)

    Weatherproof Gear Boxes and Cases

When I was serious about photography, I'd carry two camera bodies (35mm or DSLRs) and lenses to 400mm, totalling up to 25 pounds of gear (plus tripod). With portages. Depends on what you need. Now I use a P&S in a small padded case inside a small dry bag. Lots of options for different uses.

    Weatherproof Gear Boxes and Cases

I've used a Pelican case for my camera gear for over 40 years. Before that an inflatable Phoenix camera case. I first saw a Pelican case at Bull's Sluice (Class IV) on the Chattooga in 1980. A photographer was shooting rafters going over the drop. When they were through, he tossed the case into...

    Lower Yellowstone river

The coastal (e.g. Florida) pelicans are brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). White pelicans (P. erythrorynchos) are common through much of the West. I've seen them as far north as northern SK near Nunavut.

    Web Seat Comfort

I use a Thermarest seat cushion (linked in prior discussion) for the web seats in my PakCanoe. It makes a big difference for primarily sitting. Adjusting the air pressure makes a big difference. It saved me from sciatica on the last trip--a couple of puffs and it went away.

BWCA Bear Proof Food Storage Rules Change

Yes in BWCA. They refer to the IGBC guidelines, in which the Ursack is approved.

BWCA Bear Proof Food Storage Rules Change

Gates of the Arctic NPP in Alaska required food storage canisters when we did the Noatak a few years ago (as well as lots of other NPs, usually for higher elevation areas where tree hangs are not an option). NPS has a free canister loan program in Kotzebue, and a metal barrel loan program in...

    Modify a Dry Bag

I've installed lashing points on a drybag using pieces of an old dry bag and gluing it on with Hypalon adhesive (or maybe vinyl adhesive).

    Drilling Into Aluminum Gunwale?

I have a Clipper WW3 (18'6", 73#) with aluminum gunwales on which I through-bolted my central carrying yoke (prob 10-32), through the hollow channel. I did this shortly after I purchased it in 1994 or so. I've portaged it miles and miles with no ill effect. During installation, I did collapse...
