    Who am I today?

Oh, and I've probably never said "danged" in my life. Another editing faux pas from the Powers That Be.

    Who am I today?

That may be my fault--original reply had some extra stuff, edited immediately later. I guess I'm too fast for all those danged electrons. Let us know when you find out who you are.

What height boots do you prefer?

I've been using Aqua Seal or Seam Grip on my Maine shoe seams for over 30 years. It works great, and protects the seam as well as waterproofs them. You'll want to clean the SnoSeal off before if you want to try it. I use Seam Grip on all the seams of my outdoor shoes--dramatically increases...

Paddler's leg amputated in river rescue

In a similar vein, I had a kayaker surgeon that got pinned in a river either in S.A. or Africa. Her partners broke her leg in pulling her out of the cockpit as she was aspirating water. I had to wait for her recovery for my diagnosis and surgery (I had fractured C7 in my neck, and had a...

    Caribou

I worked on a couple of caribou research projects while I was in Alaska. One was with a declining woodland caribou herd on the Alaska/Yukon border, where we captured pregnant cows and held them in a 20 acre enclosure until their calves were old enough to evade predators (bears and wolves) to...

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

Years ago a friend and I were starting to research rivers for a paddling guide to NW Washington. One cold, rainy fall day we were putting in at a local river, and saw a steelhead fisherman across the way. I thought "what a miserable day to go fishing", as we slid the canoe into the water. We for...

    Northern WI wolf attack

The general rule of thumb (based on a number of studies) is that wolves can sustain a 50% mortality rate and maintain their populations.

    Northern WI wolf attack

In the Tetons in the 90s, black bears were the #1 cause of known mortality for elk calves. That was before grizzlies expanded significantly into the area.

Advice on Far North/Arctic Canoe trip

The "Canadian Canoe Routes" I referenced is a website, with an active forum--gobs of information for everything Canadian.

Advice on Far North/Arctic Canoe trip

If you've run trips in odd areas like Kyrgyzstan, then you're probably in a good position to run your own trip if you have the partners. Logistics (and $$) in remote areas can be daunting for the inexperienced. I've done three northern trips of 4-6 weeks, all self-outfitted. The only way I'd...

What is your least favorite portage?

Probably the Dubawnt River Canyon--2.5 miles, but we didn't have to deal with trees (brush, boulders, bogs, yes). But, we still had 30 days of food with us, so three heavy trips.

Wollaston or Black Lake to Kasba Lake

I've paddled from Wollaston Lake to Hudson Bay, via the Cochrane, Kognac, Thetinne, Windy, Thlewiaza and ThaAnne rivers. Last year I paddled from Wholdaia Lake to Baker Lake via the Dubawnt and Thelon rivers. All of these rivers have a fair bit of whitewater.

    Snake infested water bodies

I grew up in S.C., and some of my earliest canoe trips were to catch snakes on a local creek. We'd let them go at the end. I moved to western Washington after college, and it took me a year or so to stop looking at every step since there weren't any poisonous snakes around.
