    New seat design.

Stripper guy The Snow shoe cord is a flat tube. Incredible strength. Yes, it is varnished with Spar urethane. I thin the first coat, and really work it into the lacing, for good saturation. It shrinks the cord some, so I lace the seats a little loose. 1/2" size cord from these guys. I bought a...

    New seat design.

The Snow shoe cord works great, but I think webbing would be fine also.

    New seat design.

Here is a pic, of my old seats, just for reference. As others have stated, bow down on the sides, would lessen the comfort, in my thinking. Always good to try something different.

    New seat design.

On my latest composite build, I made a seat design change . I have always used straight bars between the front and back rails on my Snow shoe corded seats. A while back I made a bench, that the top was rounded , like a log. It was very comfortable, and so I thought I would modify my seat...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

All shined up ! Yeah, Menards quit handling the good Jen foam brushes. Have to order on line to find them around here. :(

    Alu Gunwales Closer Look Details

I picked up end caps, when I purchased a set of Bell gunnels, from an outfitter in Ely Mn. a few years ago. I had some aluminum tubbing, that I used for thwarts and grab handles. There was no prebending of the gunnels, so the thwarts have some tension on them. here are a few picks. This is...

    Fiberglass cloth

Those are from handling. Yes, a brush will help, but they won't likely show, when wetted out. I would get them, when pulling on the cloth, over the shearline. Any rough edge, will snag, and cause that.

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Looks great ! I always save scraps, and left overs, for the interior. Some day I will build with them ! What resin did you use ?

DIY composite canoe with foam core

Yes, to Nick, and stripperguy. My plan is to remove the pink foam, and replace. Either with foam, or a thin, 1/8" cedar insert. Motivation is another factor. I may see how Alan's composite turns out ? The lines come from a Jensen, tandem design, and reduced, for a solo. This is one of my...

DIY composite canoe with foam core

My first Composite, I Mistakenly, used 1/4", Pink Building foam. My hull layup, was 9 oz Kevlar, covered with a 6 oz E-glass, on the outside. I preceded to glue in a foam insert, using sand, for weight. Failing to do a test piece. ( Now I know better ! ) Hand laying another 6 oz E-glass...

DIY composite canoe with foam core

AWESOME ! I question, if the foam is that flexible ? Will it add enough stiffness ? Another reason I went with a cedar insert. I guess you will find out. Just a thought, that hit me. Maybe you had saved the plywood, that you cut the forms from ? That could be used to support the hull...

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

The streaks are definitely over saturation, from resin, running down. Yes, live and learn. One of the reasons, I prefer a foam roller. I too noticed streaking, in my earlier hulls, caused by squeegee, working the cloth. The rollers eliminated that for me. I prefer warmer temps, as most...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

PVA will hold things together, put it should release, with some persuading. Next time for me ? I will add plastic, just on top of the football, and PVA on the side Looking good ! Jim Buckled one of my composites. Fixed it, but you can still see it. I built with more layers, gave the...

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

Did you apply epoxy with a roller, or Squeegee ?

    more questions about peel ply

Peel ply works fine on a flat surface, or one that is a simple curve. Once you introduce a compound curve, such as a canoe hull ? You run into the problem that the Peel Ply won't conform. I'm talking hand lay ups here. I failed to get Peel Ply to work on one of my composites. I like the...

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

I was looking for this earlier. It illustrates the reasoning, to add an extra layer, or bias strips to the top of the main layer. I hope this clarifies what I posted.

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

After the epoxy has cured a day, come back with a scraper, and remove the strands, as well as feather the edges of the football. That's if you put the extra layer on top of main. If under main layer, you will have to live with it. Another reason to put the extra layer on top . Jim

Fiberglassing a hard shoulder chine on a cedar strip

I add bias strips on top of the main layer, when adding fill coats.. Prevents me from sanding into the main layer, and thinning it. As far as adding an extra layer, to the football ? I always add on top of the main layer, before adding fill coats. It blends in better. I have found it near...

Time to build again - Short solo/kid's tandem

Looks good ! So what is on top of the carbon ? Also, what did you use for a release, between the mold, and carbon? You will likely have that hull done, by the time our river is back to normal . We will need to paddle ! Jim
