    Portaging with Paddles.

No Title We use a lightweight 500 denier Cordura bag with full-length zipper to store the paddles in camp (to keep them from blowing around), to store the spare paddle when on the water and to carry all three paddles on the portage. The bag is clipped into the canoe hardware with shock corded...

    Wet suits?

John, When considering your purchase, it is important to note that some dry suits can be repaired or have socks and gaskets replaced if needed over the life of the suit. This will factor into the lifetime cost. Also, check out the warranty.

    Too much wind

Have sailed in the past and would like to take up hard water ice boating. It seems like a fit with the lack of snow we have been having here in Minnesota. You may have to change the old cycling adage "hills are my friend" to apply to the wind. Maybe it will be enough to give you the ol' mind...

    Wet suits?

Depending upon the conditions, a wet suit may not allow enough time to affect a rescue as compared to a dry suit. In my experience with the two pieces of safety clothing, the dry suit is much more comfortable which makes it more likely that it will be used. We have used the Kokatat Goretex...

    1 person tents

Many of the new two-person tents are light enough and compact enough for one person to carry. Otherwise, some solo tents I have been considering: Hilleberg Niak, technically for two people Hilleberg Enan North Face Triarch 1 Best of luck in your search.

    Canoeing in paintings

I can see why Canoe Country is your pride and joy. Beautiful and it capture a lot of being on the water and in wilderness. I had not seen this Kouba painting before. I am a Kouba fan especially since he was a Minnesota artist. Thanks for sharing.

    More Efficient Paddling

I would like to bring up the aspect of cadence in efficient paddling. As in other "glide", human-powered sports (flat water canoeing and kayaking, Nordic skiing, cycling, etc.) I feel that cadence is critical to efficient forward movement. In my mind, proper cadence maintains the glide better...

    Map Case

Try some silicone spray or 303 Protectant on the SealLine map case's closure. It needs to be pressed down completely and firmly along the entire length. We have had no problems after doing this.

    Chilli con Canoetripping

I don't think anyone has mentioned making jerky in the dehydrator. It works great for "whole-meat" or ground meat. I am sure many on here have much more experience than myself. Our last batch was marinated beef started in the smoker and dried in the dehydrator. It didn't last very long!

    Tripping shoes/boots......again

Good choice Alan. They would be my first choice. Very light, good height, great reviews and the look like they would fit like a glove. Unabashed wet footer here and value the proper footwear, for canoeing or any other activity. Enjoy!

    Blankets?

In the past I have used a fleece blanket for summer camping. I made two different versions: a single layer and double layer. They were rectangular with a zipper on one side and the bottom. The fleece was light and would dry quickly if need be. As you mentioned, they were bulkier than a bag...

    Innie or outie

Outie. The lightweight, fitted ground sheet has alway been permanently attached to all of my tents. It is only there to protect the tent floor from puncture and abrasion. I have never had a hole in my floor or lost the coating ( until the rest of the tent was UV degraded). Well worth the extra...

    Compression Dry Bag

SealLine Nimbus or SealLine Kodiak dry sacks. These don't have the compression straps to get in the way or add extra weight. However, they compress down nicely and then can be sealed. The Kodiak has the purge valve to aid in this. In my experience, these two are the best compromise in terms of...
