    Allagash Lake Loop June 2020

I certainly did enjoy the performance of the Wabnaki. Stability and tracking were better than expected for sure. I definitely put this canoe through some tough times on this trip and probably wouldn’t use it again if I were to do this trip again but it was great to use my own craft for its...

    My First Canoe Build

Jim, thank you! The building process was a ton of fun and some frustration. The big take away is that I have learned plenty from the mistakes made along the way and know that I will produce even better product down the road. I had to start somewhere and I am glad that I did. This forum was...

    Roy's Mystery Wood Canoe

There is some slight amine blush that occurs with the US Composites epoxy. Soap and water scrub takes care of this naturally occurring wax layer if in fact it is amine blushing.

Here is the final picture of the canoe before she leaves her nest and a link to my last “My First Canoe Build” video. Thanks to all of you for the advice and recommendations throughout the build. Very much appreciated! https://youtu.be/Z64stMRI0Xk

Thanks so much! The stool will have to pass but I would be more than happy to discuss with friendly people the boat building journey. I find those questions hilarious since I was that guy once asking those very same questions....

Thank you Rick! Looking forward to the trip!

    My First Canoe Build

Appreciate it Brian! The beam of the canoe is 34” so this is easily the least beamy boat that I have paddled in comparison to Old Town Trippers and my Mad River Tahoe. Those beams are 38” I believe. I hope to notice a difference with this canoe while solo paddling! My next boat though will...

    My First Canoe Build

Thanks Jason. Today, I just picked up some 1/4-20 x 6 galvanized carriage bolts that I used to attach my stern seat. I will post a picture in the thread. Appreciate that info!

I will keep it as is and modify when I get back if necessary. I am packing light as I have a couple 2 mile portages to conquer. Thanks for that feedback Alsg. Definitely reassuring! I will get as much of it on film to share with you all when I get back!

    My First Canoe Build

I agree about the seating height. Limited at the moment with material availability. I am leaving on Friday for my trip and tomorrow I intend to scour some stores for either longer machine screws or use carriage bolts as previously discussed. Shipping times with available material wouldn’t...

    My First Canoe Build

Well, the canoe is done with the exception of the stern seat install. Will be installing using shorter than normal spacers since I still do not have possession of 6" or 7" bolts yet. I do have 4" machine screws that I will be using to install the stern seat temporarily as I will be using the...

    My First Canoe Build

I thought of picking up some carriage bolts but didn't know whether or not it would look right. If Jim is using them then they are good enough for me. Looks like I am picking up some carriage bolts tomorrow!

    My First Canoe Build

Alsg, thankyou for the detail you provided in your post with the PAL. Prime importance to me was that the solo seat positioning (bow seat) of my canoe will accomodate my size and solo adventures. I improvised based on several tripping options that would allow for coolers and gear of a tandem...

    My First Canoe Build

Apparently screws long enough to support seat hanging do not exist at any hardware store or major box store. I even called West Marine locally and they only have screw lengths up to 4". Where does everyone source their hanging hardware for the seats?

    My First Canoe Build

Since I am active here on the board, quick question for those that have webbed seats in the past. My seats are 1 1/2" x 3/4", mortised and tenon construction and of course epoxy glued. The wood is ash and I will need to staple the webbing to seats. I intend to use stainless steel staples but...

Alsg, did you screw or glue your gunwales. I do not remember. Glad you got her all patched up and back in action.

    My First Canoe Build

Jim, I will be drilling approx 1/8" into the gunnel edge. Epoxy never fails to amaze me but the true test will indeed be when I sit my 240lb frame on the seats for days on end.
