that's me - Michael from Germany

Welcome! Your English is just fine. Enjoy your new passion…. I got serious about canoeing when I realized that it would be easier to put my gear in a canoe and go downhill rather than carry it on my back and go uphill. Lazy to the core I guess…. Look forward to some reports and pics from Germany!

Mad River ME for Whitewater Tripping?

Owned one many moons ago….It’s a banana…maneuvers great but you better have a good efficient traveling/correction stroke for the flats if they are long. Never paddled class 4/5 but assume you will have float bags as it could take on some water there unless you take the perfect line. Others will...

Learn Canoe Technique from the Paddlers of 1930

Sounds like gunnel pumping? Learned as a kid in an old aluminum hull. Hurt like heck if you fell IN the boat. Pretty certain those stunts are past me now😉

Our Member Barry Rains ("Waterdog") Has Passed, Obituary

In an age where the written word is in a sad decline I find it comforting that you can feel as though you know someone through their writings based on the simplicity of similar affinities. Never met Barry but nontheless I feel the loss. Cheers Barry we’ll miss you.

    Happy National………Day

Guessing Glenn couldn’t find a worthy event for today??? Though his past efforts testify that he is quite assiduous in his research 🧐 😄

Northstar Firebird and Savage River Illusion

When looking at solos back in the early 80’s I asked the late Ned Sharples of Canosport in Ann Arbor the difference between the Lady Bug and another model. His response shaped my purchase decisions for most of my many canoes… “The Bug will make you a better paddler”. I think canoes train us...

    Refinishing wood gunwales

Call Dave Curtis at Hemlock Canoe (585)-367-3040 and ask him what was originally applied?? Think it’s Watco.

    Refinishing wood gunwales

Watco teak oil applied per directions on the can has worked well for me for decades. No need to overthink it….just my 2¢ worth.

Lotus Egret. Old Dagger bent for me and not sure but think Carol had a Gillespe double bend. It was many moons ago….

    Weather

Thanks all for reminding me why we moved to SC! Best of luck to y’all. We hit 21 here on HHI (VERY unusual) and folks were bundled up like it was Alaska.

    “Need” a new solo!

I takeoff the vinyl but I make a small mark on the inside of the hull with a pencil so I know exactly where to put them back so they sit on the gunnel brackets (yakima)

    “Need” a new solo!

Can't stand to hear about those dirty skid marks on such a beautiful new canoe! Slit some clear vinyl tubing (Lowes) and put it on the gunnels when roofing that beauty!

    “Need” a new solo!

Not sure sue I like the foam in the end tank being open to water entrance. Certainly don’t want to rain on your parade with your new boat but I think I would call Northstar and ask about that. Wouldn’t want water getting trapped in there or absorbed by the foam. I would think even closed cell...
