    Ein bisschen German freesyle

The money is out there for a 7800.00 canoe. I just googled the average cost of a golf membership. It's 5000.00 to 60,000.00 a year, so even the cheapest ones wouldn't get you two years worth for your 7,800. Nobody bats an eye about that. A canoe can last a lifetime with almost no additional costs.

What height boots do you prefer?

My winter boots are the insulated Irish Setter Elk Hunter at 10 inches. My warmer weather boots are a 6" Red Wing upland bird hunting boot. I don't wear either for canoeing. For paddling and tripping I use 15" rubber Xtra Tuff boot or knee high Bean Hunting Boot. They're good for wet footing...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have a Royalex Mohawk 13' solo. It weighed about 43 lbs with two light paddles strapped in. My 17' composite Seliga would have weighed the same and I would have been a better choice for me. So IMO if you're going for light weight, Royalex won't cut it. A thirty pound boat would make a single...

    Peeing in one’s canoeing shorts

I guess their needs to be a study. Group A - Pees in the water with their shorts on. Group B - Pees in the bushes and may or may not use TP. At the end of the trip do a bacterial swab to see which group has the higher bacteria count, or you can do it the old fashion way. As far as the women...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I'm a double port guy too. That trip I referenced above was as close as I got to single carry. I did it to save time because it was a long drive and late in the season so the days were shorter. It made a big difference, what usually took 4.5 hours only took about 2.5. I always liked that walk...

I hope you were back paddling, I think I would have been.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Working out will surely help, and may be all you need for an easy trip. But for a hard trip with long portages 3 or 4 days a week at the gym for an hour or two won't get you to where you need to be. I think tripping that includes lots of portages is about the best exersize you can do. If there...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I took a solo trip a couple years ago with a solo boat and wanted to single carry. My total load was 85 pounds. So I didn't burn myself out and still save as much time as I could I double carried the uphills and single carried everything else. It worked real well, but having done this trip many...

    Winter Accessories

I haven't noticed any quality issues with Kincos. There are a lot of different models though, some I liked and some I didn't. I've had a lot of them as a sister in law has given them to me for Xmas every year for probably 25 years.

    Winter Accessories

This is pretty much my glove system and it would cover your temperature range for me. First, I don't like gloves with the elastic cuff around my wrist. It takes too long getting them on and off. In order to seal up the area between my sleeve and glove I use these custom made wrist gators. The...

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

A flying squirrel showed up again last night and I got a better picture. You can more clearly see its big eyes and ears, and the flap of skin where the white fur of its' belly meets the darker fur on its' back. It also has a flat tail but I'm not sure you can see it.

    White Rose Canoe closing

It's too bad a specialty canoe company can't make a go of it these days. I wish I was in the market for a new boat.

I regret ever using slides. For me they are the on images that never get looked at.

    An Alternative, Alternative Fuel

That looks really nice Jim. What are the dimensions when it's set up, and does it have a double bottom?

    Trip photography.

I started out with a 35mm slr and had a small telephoto lens for it. It was heavy to take on trips and was usually stored in waterproof bag, so was not easily accessible. I switched over to digital with a small Lumix point and shoot. It was much lighter and easier to keep accessible. Although it...

    An Alternative, Alternative Fuel

I don't know what could have gone wrong with your canister stove Black Fly but I still think it would be a good alternative. In a recent video from Jim Baird covering a 22 day barren ground trip, I was surprised that he used a canister stove as he usually used a single burner white gas one. He...

    Waxed canvas tarp/wool blanket

Unfortunately I heard they don't produce it anymore. The main market for it was making boat sails and now they are made from synthetics. I have two identical tents, one is Egyptian cotton at 18 lbs. the other is the lightest substitute canvas that Churchill Outfitters could come up with. It...

    Trip photography.

I agree that most landscape photos don't turn out as good as we hoped. When I go through old photos I enjoy the people, campsite and canoe pics more than the landscape ones. I used to trip with a professional photographer who called any of those type of pictures "snapshots" that weren't worthy...

    An Alternative, Alternative Fuel

I used to use a twig stove and started out using forest litter and small twigs and found that I had to be almost constantly feeding it. I found I got better burn times using wood I processed for that purpose. It was a fraction of the work that it would take to process wood for a campfire because...
