Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

I've used a collapsible water container before, but never stuck with it. I like when things are multifunctional. This system is not only ballast, but a ready to go fire, shelter and a seat for in the boat or on shore.

Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

Also, even though it only weighed about 25 lbs. I wouldn't be taking it on a portage trip. I wouldn't need it, because I can trim the boat with gear. That being said, I did take it on the two overnight trips I did this year. Not for the weight, but for the firewood. I was so used to hauling it...

Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

In this picture I'm using it to adjust my trim tandem. I didn't mention above that the tarp on the bottom also helps protect the bottom of the boat from the lumpy hardwood. The foam pad on top also acts as a cushion. Now I can comfortably sit on it pedestal style positioned anywhere in the boat...

Bow ballast for solo paddling: the more unusual, the better

I'm glad you asked Glenn. I've come up with the perfect ballast for me, but I haven't completed it yet. I use an army duffle bag and lay it on its side. On the bottom ( actually the side) I lay a folded tarp. On top of that goes split firewood, this gives it the weight, and on top of that goes...

Winter paddle and poling through ice

It's a royalex Winona Spirit II. It was the first boat I bought after I acquired my Pa. lake house. I think it's a good hull. I plan to change out the tractor seats and use it for white water. I look forward to reading about your winter paddling exploits.

Winter paddle and poling through ice

I found the hook on eBay. I had been looking in local antique shops w/o success, which surprises me because the Poconos were the ice harvesting capital of the country at one time. Many (maybe even most) man made lakes around here were made for this purpose, including the one I live on. I think...

Winter paddle and poling through ice

Thanks Jim, I don't think I'll miss the six inches that broke off. Here is a picture of the break. The screw was almost as long as the thickness of the wood. I think it is overkill for what it does, and I'm thinking to cut the screw in about half. Also, do you think the black color indicates rot?

Winter paddle and poling through ice

I took my first paddle of the year a few days ago. The lake, which had been frozen since the end of November had just thawed out from a warm spell with lots of rain and wind. From what I could see the only ice left was in a cove at the windward end of the lake. Although I didn't need to cross...

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

That's a lot of paddling days Scott. Do you leave a boat on your vehicle for the season?

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

I know he was kidding with you, but there is truth to what he said. I've had pans that didn't want to give up the odor of what was fried in there previously. I never noticed that with my cold handle pans. Like I said above I've gone from cooking fish on a trip and then used the pan at home for...

The Importance of the Initial Blade Catch

I do my share of hit and switch too. With my variety of the stroke it works maybe even better than when using correction strokes. The beauty of it is that there is no change in the angle or direction of the paddle from the time the tip hits the water until the power phase is over. I don't feel...

The Importance of the Initial Blade Catch

Here is my take away for knowing what your most efficient and fastest stroke is. Even if you generally aren't in a hurry, there are times when you need to move as fast as possible. Maybe it's just a few powerful strokes to miss an obstacle, like a rock on a river. Or you could be off shore when...

Cold handle frying pans, they’re still out there.

I'm not so sure about this. I never made potato pancakes in mine, but I've gone from frying fish to making oatmeal in one and didn't notice any lingering fish taste or smell. I don't use soap when I wash them, just hot water and some vigorous scrubbing with an abrasive pad. I've noticed that...

    Winter pants

I have a pair of those Codet pants and they are warm, but like you said, you need wind pants with them.

Antenna interference of different cartopped canoe materials

Too bad you're not into aluminum canoes. With a little wire and a couple alligator clips you can turn it into a great antenna.

    Winter pants

Whenever I've washed heavily used wool clothing I was always amazed by how light they felt afterwards.

    Photo of the day

Good for you Glenn. I hope it met your expectations. Where there many other boats out that day? Hahaha I was hoping to get out that day too, but the wind that ate up the ice on the lake also kept me off the water. Had I gotten out I would have paddled every month in 2024.

    Not a Canoe, but Cool!

It looked to me like it kept water from pooling on a cover. I think I could see brackets for two more further up the hull.

    Winter pants

I like lined pants. They have mostly replaced my wool ones. My favorite wool pants were a medium weight US military surplus pair. They were loose fitting and high waisted. The zipper fly was so long that I could reach in and not only adjust my underwear but I could just about pull my socks up...

Year-end overnight camping trip on the Pawcatuck River in RI

What he said, plus you are very fortunate to be able to round up so many fellow paddlers this time of year. I don't even know that many paddlers near me.
